rod's onyx clownfish update

not always.. I had a pair in a RBTA that kept their blackness (very black). That being said, I wouldnt plan a system for onyx and BTAs. I would say the odds of them staying black is about 30-40%

so, it sounds like they have generally hold their color better with carpet anemones?? is there an issue with doing multiple carpets in one tank assuming i have room for them??

also, rod i sent you a pm - thanks.

hey im worried about the size they come from premium aquatics. i have a 250 gallon tank im afraid they would get lost or something would happen to them. should i be concerned?

when I first got them I kept them in a seperate little tank inside my main tank. its called a beta breeder, I drilled extra holes for circulation, you don't want to use the breeder nets because they tend to collect a lot of debris and are very difficult to clean. I kept them in this "breeder" for about a month until they were aggressive with food and grew up a little.

I'd suggest this route over direct introduction to the tank. It's important that they know what is food so when it comes time for feeding all the big fish don't bully them out of the way.

I picked up three of them earlier in the week from Faois. Great looking fish.
Post some pictures!

Camera is not great but here is a quick pic.

Is it only at an early age/development that you are not supposed to put them with a BTA or do they have the same problem when adults?

how long have you had that anemone..? I had a yellow/white blue tipped sebae once but the colors faded over a few months..

I've had the sebae for a month...it has darken nicely, tentacles are fully extended and man it is sticky. I enjoy much that the purple on the tips really stand out.

WOW!The clowns have darkened so much! The anemones looks so very good!Looks like its gotten darker after just that short time!

yea the sebae is about 3-4x bigger than when I got it...tentacles are long and its a dark cream color now. The clowns love the bigger home, they seriuosly get darker by the day. Its interesting how quickly they darkend up after removing the BTA

its been 6 months...the large sebae is gone and is now replaced with a blue gigantea...the female is almost full onxy..the male is trailing a little, but is still darkening up nicely.

They look amazing; my gf and I are getting a really nice breeding pair of Onyx clowns and we're gonna start growing out the fry. So hopefully we'll produce some beautiful babies and we'll be able to contribute to the growing hobby and save wild fish. We're also going to have black and white occs and gold and white stripped maroons!

Not to mention all the rose bubble tipes one can imagine! Woo-hoo!

Funny how there is so much variability. I have a pair that looks very similar to your except my female has full vest and almost pants male is laging but full vest and partial pants and have been in a RBTA since they were 3/8 inch long (Rod's). They are 1 1/2" now. Glad it has worked out, nice fish

I find it interesting the transition from bubble tip to sebae...sebae to carpet. They darkened quickly from bubble tip to sebae..and are darkening even faster from sebae to carpet. I wonder if the strenght of the anemone sting encourages darker coloration.
