rods onyx clows

How experienced are you with nems? A haddoni or a gig would be sweet, with a bubbletip there is a slight possibility the clowns may lose their onyx.

I've never seen any scientific data on this. My onyx percs have been in bubble tips the entire time I've had them and have gotten more black.

i never heard of this. i have my Rods laying pair in a rose tip and the are very black still.

Most cases show that bubble tips will fade the black coloration. For those who have them keep their black in bubble tips, you're the exceptions. For them to keep their black I'd recommend a sebae or carpet anemone. I've kept them in both and they will darken nicely in those.

Talk to Toddtrex about coloration loss vs. anemone type. He has experience with losing color in one type and regaining color in another.

I believe he went from a rose bubble tip to a sebae (H. Malu) and his fish darkened nicely.

This is my personal experience-->

Bubble tip anemone:

then transfered to sebae anemone...notice how much darker they are in the black as then with the bubble tip where they were muddy color.

They kept getting darker and darker then I was lucky enough to get a blue gig and the female is full onyx with the male getting there:

She's a lot darker now and awesome.

Out of most Onyx clowns that i have seen, its a 50% chance they loose their onyx. With Rod's i have noticed they have about a 25% chance they have of loosing their onyx in a bta

One of the blackest pair of onyx clowns I have seen were hosting in a rose bubble tipped anemone. However I have seen alot of threads were they lose their blacks hosting in E. quad, and also have heard H. mag cause loss of black as well.

I have three Rods Onyx clowns in the tank. When I bought them as juvies, I have over a dozen RBTA in the tank. Let just say that after about 6 months the RBTAs were replaced by different anemones....
Two are in a gigantea now and the other one is in a frogspawn. The fading of A.Percula colors in BTA is real. It might not happen to you but it does happen.
If you search back on other posts, you'll see that this issue has been brought up many times.
Also, Magnifica(or Ritteri) can cause A.Perc to fade as well.

i get my two onyx clown fish soon cant wait. what would be a good choice for a anemone for the two

If your tank is new. The clowns will do just fine without an anemone. Don't rush to get an anemone for the clowns when your tank is newly set up.
Natural host for A.Perc is Gigantea but these are so much harder to find one that is healthy. They require intense lighting and a lot of flow.
Haddoni is a little easier to keep but they still need good light and moderate flow.
Sabae nem is also good for A. Perc.

Questionable nems for A.Perc are BTA variance, and Maginifica. Based on my experience, both of these anemone faded the black in just less than 1 month.

Mine (( and they are actually wild caught SI percs )) lost ALL of their black while being hosted by an LTA (( M. doreensis )) and regained about 70% of it back while being hosted by an S. Haddoni.

Don't care if this isn't scientific for some, it happened; pictures don't lie.

When I first got them,

And lastly this is the thread I made about it -- has dates and what not,

interesting. i didnt know about that. I have a friend who i gave him a picasso that was pretty blackless that was hosting in a rose. he added it to his tank with no nem and it darkened up rather quickly. i shrugged it off. i guess i have witnessed it as well.

my snowcasso's have stayed very black in their purple lta. i guess my next move is a carpet for them to darken up. learn something new every day.

it happens (non-native anemones like BTAs can cause loss of onyx coloration). it doesnt always happen, but it does happen. if you and your friends have been able to maintain onyx coloration consider yourself lucky that you didnt run into issues others have. anemones have an impact on the perc's color.

Sorry, but this forum isn't for buying/selling. Plus you need to have 50 meaningful posts and be a member for 90 days.

So the color change only effects percs? I have a maroon that is hosting a BTA, she probably won't change colors though will she?
