Rod's Onyx

ok, i'll try that. There's some rock he can hide around, but right now he just likes to hang out in the upper corner. I'll try to get some pics up today. He's cute.

This damn thread just cost me $304!
I got 5 Rod's Onyx coming tomorrow morning and there's a nice home waiting to accommodate them.
Big day tomorrow.

On a more serious note, Rod has warned me about the clowns fading their black in BTA. And I've read Nick's(GSM guy) post about it also.
Can anyone fill me in on this?

Yes, they're already out of the tank and waiting to be picked up by a local reef club member.

That's a sweet tank

mine had black dorsal fins when they showed up they were tiny, rods clowns are the fastest to darken that i have seen.

I figure posting this will save Rod from some headache.

This is a standard email that is now being sent to all enquiries. Forgive my rudeness by not sending a personal reply. I am normally an over-friendly guy but as of late, I have been finding myself answering phone calls and emails on my Onyx clowns which takes too much time from my real job. Sometimes the phone calls are dragged on way to long. Clownfish breeding is part of my hobby, not my business. When I answer 5 or 6 twenty minute phone calls and a few emails every day... I am a busy person that puts in long hours... All added up.. my boss doesn't like it very much ;-).

My Clowns...

My clown come from a popular bloodline that seems to reproduce that deep dark coloration and black dorsal fins that my clowns are known for, more than any of the other clowns being sold as "Onyx".

People usually want, and order the darkest possible. Darkest does not mean largest. Sometimes I get a few that don't color up as quickly as others and they and stay in the grow out tank until they color or until someone wants some large clowns and color is not a concern. Most of my clowns do get that deep dark coloration that hey are known for, but I cant always guarantee... Sometimes it does take some longer than others to get their coloration. The average size of my "darkest clown is 1/2- 1 inch in length. They are small. Usually a good idea to protect the overflows with some mesh.

When ordering people usually request the darkest possible.. A clown with 2 bars and quite a bit of black between those 2 bars is $50. I do my best to get the darkest clown and then put them into glass jar to better inspect their coloration and then decide whether the clown has enough black to warrant a $50 charge, or if I will charge less.

If you want to spend less you can request some that haven't colored up as well. They are $30. Keep in mind that I don't have the time to discuss this at length when ordering. A $30 clown will look like a standard percula but with a good chance of getting its full onyx coloration. It will likely take a lot longer for coloration vs. ordering "the Darkest Possible".

The best way to order is to call me with a credit card number and an address.. 815-748-2141. Please try to keep it brief, and forgive me if I sound annoyed. I am usually not that way, but the clowns have been chewing too much time lately. No matter what happens I usually get the clownfish calls when I am at my busiest.... I will do my best to answer any questions, but again, please try to keep them brief. Clowns are my hobby.. not a business.

Its best to call to place an order on a Thursday for a Friday delivery. Please do not call in advance for a later shipment. Please do not call on Friday because I can ship on Friday anyway.

Visa and Master card only. NO Paypal, no American express no Discover.

I use Overnight shipping at www.ups.com . The box weighs 7 lbs (Dim weight), at 13 x 11 x 9 inches. I am in DeKalb IL. 60115. Please check for yourself instead of me checking multiple times per day.. I will not use your account number, I will not use Fed ex, I will not use....

I ship to United States. address only. If you want to cross the border with them, Its your responsibility to work out the details.

I do offer a live arrival but that's it. These are a tank raised clown and if they survive the shipping they should live unless your tank is not suitable. Keep in mind that they are small and you will likely need to mesh the overflows for a few days or until they settle in. Wal-mart has a white plastic mesh in the craft section.

Quarantine is not necessary. All of my fish have been with me for years. I do not "bring in" any wild fish.

Bubble tip anemones can cause color to fade. Not always, but it is possible. I have some pairs in BTAs that are blacker than black while accepting a BTA as a host, but on the other hand I have personally witnessed some super black clowns lose their color within weeks of being in a BTA.

All of my clowns are kept in a group and have not paired off yet. Getting 2 will usually assure you a pair.

I do not advise groups of clowns, but if you want to attempt, I would recommend an odd number and at least 5..

I do not advise group buys.. .. Example.. You order 10 clowns (5 pairs for 5 different people) some of the clowns will be darker than others and pricing will vary. You may have orders 10 of my darkest but as I pack, I decide to only charge 40 for 5 of them and 50 for the remaining five. Your invoice will read $450 for 10 clowns. It will be up to you to decide which were $40 and which were $50 and who gets what. Somebody gets upset.
Thanks

Im seriously thinking about buying a pair. The shipping will cost me $90 so before I pull the trigger, how different are the Rods compared to the ORA onyx??

ORA Onyx where are those? i have never heard of an ORA onyx i dont think they breed them.

you really cant go wrong with Rods, most of my friends order a pair after seeing mine in person.

i beleive ora dosent have an onyx clown but they are great and you get to watch thenm grow like you would a coral ......bite the bullet and get a pair i sold mine and hate my self for it but am planing on buying a pair for the future

see i cant see myself ever selling mine, after 2 year i would have to put a ridiculous price on them if i was forced to sell.

heck ive fed them enough rods food that they were cheaper.
