Rods vs Reef Frenzy

Anybody know the comparisons between Rod's and Reef Frenzy? I currently use Rod's but thinking about giving Reef Frenzy a try.

My fish and corals respond to reef frenzy better than rods have both in my freezer

Bringing this thread back since I just got some Reef Frenzy and used it for the first time tonite.
I've been using Rod's Food for a few years now and was interested in seeing if there was much difference.

First impression.... I need more impressions.

Tomorrow I will feed Rod's again to double check, but when i put the Reef Frenzy in the tank there were two things that seemed to stand out to me. For one, the Rod's seems much denser than the RF. I noticed this in the package. The Rod's is very dark compared to the RF, making the RF "seem" like it might have more water content? But that's just a visual observation. When i put the RF in the tank, I felt like I wasn't getting as much dispersion and amount of food flowing into the water column as with the Rod's. Almost like it was "cleaner" and was completely gone in seconds. But not because the fish went crazy over it, in fact it seemed like some didn't even get a chance. There really did seem to be less of it. Also, there were some bigger chuncks that didn't break up until a fish attacked it.

So when i was done pouring the food into the tank (mixed with tank water and some Oyster Feast) I stepped back and the water was almost completely clear! Usually there is lots of little specs all over the tank. This is kind of what i mean about it being cleaner. But I'm not seeing that as a good thing. I see all those little specs as coral food.

In the end, I felt like I needed to go back and supplement with some of my New Era Marine Pellets, which the fish eagerly attacked.

So as of first use, i'm feeling like the Rod's is packed with a lot more stuff in the same 1" square piece of food. Will continue to experiment and report back but would be interested in thoughts from anyone else who has experience using both foods.

Thanks for sharing, I have a lot of different frozen foods that I am trying to see if I go back to Rods, thinking that I will end up there or making my own mix.

No problem and don't take anything i said as a negative yet. It's just initial impressions of using a food that seems to have some interesting differences compare to what I've been used to using for so long. This doesn't necessarily mean better or worse yet, but that's what I want to find out. One feeding is definitely not enough to come to any kind of conclusions. :)

I can't speak to Rod's, as I've never used it, but I switched from the standard Hikari/SF Bay/etc. cubes to LRS Fish Frenzy (the carnivore blend) a few months ago, and will never go back. Even my Foxface goes absolutely bananas when I throw this stuff into the tank.

Dennis - Do you happen to know if Rod's can be purchased from an online vendor? I'd like to try it, but the nearest LFS that carries it seems to be more than 100 miles away from Raleigh.

I've use both and reef frenzy is MUCH better than Rods. It is fresher, cleaner, and the fish and corals go nuts for it.

Rods is also a decent food but not as clean. There seems to be more "filler" in it.

YES, this is what I was wondering! It was like my water was so clean immediately after... I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or what?!
Maybe the "filler" is what I was seeing leftover, floating all over the tank afterwards.

Thanks (duh - I should've looked at MD before asking the question).

Just a thought, not having used either of these products, but Rod's website notes that the basic formula is designed for everything in the tank - fish, inverts and corals.

Perhaps the "filler" that produces the cloudy water is actually very small particle sizes intended for corals?

Reef Frenzy is also for everything in the tank.
They have Fish Frenzy (and some other varieties) that doesn't have the coral foods if you don't have coral.

Used the RF again last night and it went well. I took Larry's advice and stirred it up a bit after defrosting to break up some of the big pieces and things went very well. Everyone got plenty to eat and again the water was clear really quickly! Also, the first bit i fed the first night was the very top of the package at the zip lock seal where it tends to thin out. Last night i got more into the meat of the package. I probably broke off more than I needed this time.

Will report back again soon...

i've also used larrys reef frenzy recently since my local club did a group buy. i think the food is really clean and would recommend it. it also seems very fresh from what i can tell.

Absolutely 100% Frenzy Foods. I have tried several other foods and none compare to Frenzy. The feeding response is crazy by all critters in the tank.

I can promise you this, Rods, nor any other frozen mix will go in any of my tanks...EVER.

I've been very impressed with Reef Frenzy, been rotating the different RF varieties to mix it up. The fish love it. Anthias, yellow damsels, gold midas blenny, cardinals and baby hippo (who is growing like crazy) go bonkers for it. I like knowing whats in it and that its all natural with no fillers. My corals are doing great and seem to love it too.

If memory serves, the fillers that you are referring to from Rod's are just smaller bits of food to ensure that everything is fed, whereas in the Reef Frenzy you are feeding, there is more water to have that cleared up quicker, just from some of the reading that I have done in the past.
