Rose question

Hi there

This is the 2nd time I purchased a rose, put her in the front of the tank and now she moved and I can't see her, she went behind the rocks. Why do they do this? She cost over 100 and not is hiding somewhere?

How do you keep them I one area?

RBTA's or just bubble tips commonly hide while stressed.Give him time. And theres no way to keep them from moving!

Ok...let me see if I can help you out here...I have a tank with 9+ RBTAs and have been fortunate enough to basically have them all stay in one place...but it wasn't easy.

And from one newb (I consider myself a newb) to what seems like another, let me say that attempting to keep an anemone in one place is about as fruitless as playing the lottery with the expectation of ACTUALLY winning millions of dollars.

Every RBTA I've had has been different. They all look a bit different and have different "personalities" and therefore, they're all individual creatures and will behave as such. They're going to find a spot that's the most desirable for them.

While raising RBTAs, I've noticed a few things:

1) they like GOOD light...and will search high and low for the optimal place where they get JUST the right amount of light...too much light can fry an anemone (believe it or not)

2) they like medium flow; too much flow will drive them into undesirable places (i.e. you cannot see them)

3) they like holes and crevices so they can tuck their foot deep into a rock to protect it; an anemone's foot is like their heart...if it gets torn up, it can spell instant death. Luckily, tank-raised BTAs generally are hardy and can recover from most injuries (see two attached photos of one of my RBTA after a dance with a powerhead and her now).

4) they also need good water quality, which goes without saying basically...

If you provide all of that, then your nem will find a suitable place to situate itself and will do quite well....I apologize if that place is at the rear of your tank...but it's better to have a healthy anemone than one that dies and ruins your whole tank!

If you have any ?'s, don't hesitate to PM me...

Brock

Hi there

They do that. You need to provide them with a place that they like in low to light moderate flow area and a recess/crevice/hole where they can plant their foot where it is protected.

When placing a new bta in my tank, I like to turn off nearly all flow in the aquarium and place the anemone in a location that I like and press their foot into a hole where I hope that it will attach. I will leave the flow down for a half hour or so while I monitor what the anemone is doing. I like it when I see the anemone pull itself into the hole that I placed it in.

Be careful about the hole that you press it into. I have had the experience of the anemone coming out on the opposite side of the rock because the hole that I pressed it into went all the way through the rock.

:eek1: Don't pay this much for an rbta, snag one off of a buddy who has had one split in his/her tank multiple times. No need to buy wild ones as clones are pretty abundant. You might ask your lfs if the animal that you purchased is a clone from some one's tank in your community. I think in our local reefing community the going price for an rbta is between $35 and $45. I think everyone has a clone of the same anemone in the Phoenix metro area.

Thanks for the info...

I have a 450 Gallon so finding here is a lost cause with almost 400lbs of live rock... the tank is 8ft long, 2.5 ft wide and 3 ft tall so she can be almost anywhere. I have 3 450W MH bulbs and I have 3 Korliall 8's sorry for the spelling.

I would also give it time. Im willing to bet that its stressed out from moving tanks. You never know I had one once when I placed it in the tank it ended in the back. But after a couple of weeks it ended up back up front almost dead center. But if does make a home in the back of the tank there is one easy way to try and make it move. Change up your powerheads so it changes the flow in your tank. There might be a chance that it wont like it and move.

WOW! I wish RBTA's were this inexpensive in my area! just bought one (i think - post coming) that was originally priced at 85, though i got them down to $50
