Roseville stores?

Good points. And by way of disclosure, I have only been to the Rocklin store once, about 2 months ago -- Maybe an anomaly. I recognize that every LFS deals with deads, ich, cyano, bubble algae, etc. but being as I shop 3-7 LFS/week -- The degree of nasty stood out memorably on my visit.

I guess i'm one of the few then.

I live 2 minutes from Aqualife. I really like them, they have never done me wrong and they have changed things around again instead of all the small tanks that were nitrate bombs they have put all the corals in 3- 100 gallon tanks they have in the fish are on the far right side.

Fish. Aqualife is the best. Best selection, Best price and They are healthy. yes because of the quantity of fish they get in they do get some with ick, etc.

Where else can you get nice size Bangaii cardinals for $9.99? Thats there everyday price

Well for what it's worth...I didn't take the comments above as full on negative responses to Aqualife. Working in a LFS I agree every store has good and bad, and every store has dealt with all types of algae, apstasia, flat worms, pest, parasites of all kinds. It's a given when dealing with wild caught, and when you are willing to take trade ins from customers.
What I did get from the comments, is that if it boils down to time limits, I might be better off skipping Aqualife, and making sure I get to see CRS, and your reef.
I was actually concerned about time limits, but think I figured a way to make sure I can visit all three stores with out problem.

The whole point of me making sure I can hit these stores on a family trip is more to try and find stuff that we don't have up here and bring it home.
So I intend to hit all three ......god willing!

I will Kevin! I really have to say, I wish people would be straight up honest with me about my performance in the store, all my customers seem really happy with me, even with my limited knowledge in some area, but then they come in complaining about an employee in another store, and you have to think....hmmm what do they tell the other stores about me?

So I would be more then happy to give a run down on the stores I visit, and let you all know what I bought, so you can all say, "Damn I was gonna get that!"
So if you have been eye balling something in the stores recently you better go get it. I am not sporting a ton of money when I come down, but it looks like I might have a bit more then I originally thought!

So one of my main items I am looking for are dendros, or duncans, if the store doesn't have them, who is going to be willing to part with some? :)

I shop 4 LFS a week usually and I agree Aqualife usually has some unimpressive stock, but they occasionally get some really nice stuff or great deals. I love their live rock selection. I usually dig through and find rock traded in from someones tank with corals still hanging on to them. That's how I picked up some yellow ish pom pom zenia and orange on orange zoas. If you have the time I would go there, but otherwise YR has healthier, more colorful stuff and a better selection. Alot of times half the fun is finding that great deal, or nursing a sweet coral back to life IMHO.

I never raved about the Rocklin store, so Justin i think you're thinking of the other Matt, as he worked in the Rocklin store, and now works at another LFS in Sac.

Twisted, if time works out for you, hit all 3 and let us know what you see / find and form your own conclusions. We all have our prefrences and who knows you may score a sweet deal in the the process.

Just my two cents worth, but you might want to stop by Aqualife in Rocklin. Was in there yesterday, they got a big transhipment of corals this week and have some really nice fish too. They have been remodeling the last couple months and went through some management changes and are now building their stocks up again. Nice looking stuff and good prices. They also had some big gigas clams, like 6-8" long.
Check out Yourreef too, John always has nice acros and stuff too.

Jeff

Maybe on your way in or way out you go by Marysville/Yuba city? Rob is developing a fabulous store in that lil cowtown. That would be the place to find a duncun or dendro if they were to be found. He is Mr. LPS ;) We wont even mention the fabulous micromussas he's holdin.

I go through marysville/yuba city several times a year on my way to my inlaws in grass valley, so I most likely won't stop by that store on this trip I will next month on my way to grass vally.
I never knew there was a store there, all I ever got from the locals was about fins and feathers or whatever that place was.

Fins/feathers was a trash-heap but scored big on deals when they gave up. Rob's place ("Underwater Paradise") might actually appeal to reefers.

he has a small but growing inventory. I'm hoping he can stay strong with softies, LPS, SPS. SPS IS GOOD.

Ok back from Roseville. Have to say it was a tireing trip. So after 3 hours of frying in the sun at Denios I dropped my wife and daughter off at the mall, and my dad and mother went in thier car and followed us, so he dropped off my mom and went store hoppping with me.

Aqualife....Nice clean store, good displays. Not much in the way of corals, but great livestock selection. Offered me a nicely colored blue carpet for a pretty good price...didn't want to risk transporting it with only a half empty ice chest to pack it in. Staff was friendly, afraid I didn't get any names, but good guys.

Coral Reef shop... Nice looking store too, display is broken up pretty well. had a bit of livestock and a good selection of corals. Most of the corals there I have up here to some degree, BUT the green and orange stripped yuma was beautiful! if any of them would have offered to lower the price of it for me I would have probablly walked out of there with it, but I think they were busy, so I didn't get to talk with anyone there. Nice shop though.

Your Reef...the owner? I assume, is a really nice guy, didn't crack me much of a deal price wise, but he doesn't know me from adam so wouldn't expect him too unless he was trying to move stuff fast, from talking to him it sounds like he has plenty of stuff moving fast enough to not worry about a thing.
Good guy, nice shop, nice display. Ended up dropping 90 something bucks there just on some cloves! Most of the SPS he had I have in my display tanks in the store, what I don't have he wasn't ready to sell, or was already sold, so he is obviously a hot spot.

Nobody had me Dendros. I had my hopes up that I would find some. Your Reef has some Duncans that I hear people raveing about for $50 a polyp...ok, so they are a little diffrent, but they have little to no color...so I passed. Hopefully I will find a contact with some soon.

Your Reef seems to be in the loop with some of the collector circut. I hope to obtain such a rank sometime. The owner of the store I work at has several collector pieces, since he bought the store stocked he doesn't know the names of a lot of the stuff, but I am finding them. and as I grow more and more proficent with my corals I will start getting pieces of all of them for my own tanks. Until then I will have to deal with softies and LPS.

If Your Reef reads this I gave you a business card for the store I work at, we would love a piece of that watermelon chalice sometime, might have to talk trade. I only have a couple thing I didn't notice in your store in ours, but I am sure the owner would work something out.

Thanks to the stores down there, you all are first rate stores in my opinion, hope you guys can make it up to look around our and BS a bit.

Brian

Yeah, that blue carpet is nice and pretty big.

The guys working were probably Kyle and Dane, they are there alot.

I was at Your Reef today also. will probably go back tomorrow and pick up a few things.

I do agree with you i do not see what all the hype is about Duncans

hey twisted, what stores are worth checking out in redding?
i pass thru there once or twice a year.

In Redding you have the store I work at called "The Deep" it used to be called "Saltwater to Go" but new owner took over last Novemeber, he's been in the hobby for a very long time, but new to owning his own store. Really good guy and knows a lot about the majority of his stock. Got a few high priced SPS in the display but none of it is fraged, I am working on getting him to do that. Or allow me to. I am not anywhere near an expert, more like an amatuer in most cases, but seem to know enough for most of my customers, and I think I can frag anything...I did say "I think I can".

The other main store is Aquariums Plus. They have some pretty nice corals most of the time. I think the owner is still going down south and hand picking things once in awhile.

There is a store called Family Pets now and he is trying his hand at getting into carrying corals, he only brings in limited stock right now.

If your headed up this way drop by the R.A.R.E. club forum and let us know we will give you address and stuff to mapquest.

thanks for the info. i should be headed up that direction the last weekend in june/early july. i remember selling my majestic angel a couple years ago to a guy from either redding or red bluff but can't remember who.

I was headed to Grass valley this weekend so thought I would stop by Underwater Paradise on way through.
I have to say, the owner said he has only been open 3 months give or take a couple weeks, and I was impressed, his fish selection was a bit small, but really, not many of us are looking for fish when we go store hopping on the weekends.

Coral wise, this guy has a great selection. Sadly I am stuck way up north where the selection gets really dull due to lack of distributors comming up this far. So being used to the everyday common blah corals, some of his stuff really stood out, some of it is stuff you can find every where in the bay area I am sure, but the guys in the bay area have it easy, they get to go hand pick stuff every week as it comes in.
Us folk up north and stuck with the left overs.

So anyways Kudos on the store Rob hope it does well for you! And one day I will be back for that Micro!
