Rossmont Waver Question

I saw the BRS video on the Waver today, and really has me interested.

It may be simple, but what makes the waver work with AC vs. the traditional DC wave makers? Most AC "Wavemakers" are just simple on and off, but the Waver has variable speeds as well.

Since the Mover pumps use normal AC connections, so it doesn't look like anything special to me. What stops the Waver from working with other AC pumps as well? The only thing that looks different then other pumps, is that the impeller, on the Mover, locks into place. Could the locking impeller be the key, or is it in the motor as well?

Thanks!

Its probably a universal motor with triac (phase angle) or pwm control
A regular AC powerhead is a synchronous motor and its speed is fixed to line frequency..

I was wondering the same thing. Seems like you could plug in any ac pump and have it work. I'd like to hear of someone trying it just to see if it works or not.
