Royal gramma

Wife really wants a royal gramma because they are "pretty" I wouldn't mind one either. It would be the only fish in a 10g and would be moving into a 20 long on about 6 months when we get our new house. Would there be any inherent issues with this or long term in the 20? When I transfer everything to the 20 I would like another fish or 2.

Royal Grammas are super peaceful. Make sure future tankmates are compatible and peaceful otherwise he will likely be bullied severely.

Once clowns get mated and start laying eggs or are in an anemone they are very aggressive. Even the sweet little Ocellaris or Perculas. There are many stories on RC about Ocellaris biting the hands that feed them. Just do a search for it.

AFAIK they won't bother a Royal Gramma though. Should be fine.

OP may want to post all potential purchases in the big stickied thread on "New to the Hobby".

No the Royal Gramma really gets along with most other fish as long as they don't invade their space. Even then all they do is put up a scare tactic of opening their mouth as big as they can to say "I'm big and bad and going to bit you if you don't leave" LMAO Love mine.

I was stating what I did about the clowns because they are aggressive as I stated in my other post. It had nothing to do with Royal Grammas

Yea, but he was asking if the clowns would be okay with the RG or if they would be too aggressive for one, your post could be read as if the combination wouldn't work. :p :)

In such a small space (20g) it should be either the Gramma or the clowns but not both. You could always get a better suited fish to swim alongside the Gramma.

I have a 34g and my clown pair (the female especially) will certainly not tolerate a new fish, regardless. The female used to take chunks out of my algae pad and so I binned it - if that was another fish it would have gone horribly wrong.

I would agree if it were a larger tank, but in a 20 two clowns could be more aggressive. many nano tanks have only one clown who do quite well.

In a small 10g tank for 6 months I wouldn't put anything more than a Royal Gramma in there. Also bear in mind, a small salt water tank is going to require a lot of attention.

I had 3 grammas, 2 small marine bettas and a pair of percula all together in a 10 gallon QT without any issues. The gramma were in that tank for 6 months, the percula for 4 and the marine betta for 2 and 3 months.

A pair of gramma and a pair of ocellaris or percula can work just fine in a 20 gallon tank if it is structured to the fish's needs.
