RS232 to USB Adaptor?

Do I need a special adapter or can I use any RS232 to USB adaptor for the Profilux EX II?

I have the profilux wireless card, but have not got the network setup yet. In the interim, I figured I would just connect the Profilux to my Laptop to get it up and running. Being a newer laptop, it does not have the serial port. I am setting up my marine system and the wireless network is on hold for the short term.

Thanks

Thanks navyav8tr. I just wanted to be sure that one would work before I got it. In Canada we have the Source, which replaced Radio Shack. I will check there.

I've used one for quite a while. It works pretty well. I did have some trouble upgrading firmware through it however.

FWIW I upgraded my firmware with no problems over this cable. Of course after posting this I am sure I will have problems in the future. :)

Again thanks. I picked up a Nexxtech USB to Serial cable, installed the drivers and it works fine. I also managed to get the Profilux firmware updated to 4.01. Took a couple tries along with the manual and the help in this forum.

Tomorrow, I start to hook up the various pieces. I got the controller to use on a multiple tank system. Actually 4 tanks all operating from a common sump and refugium.

It is great to know that if I need help, this forum has the answers.

Ok I tried using a usb to serial adapter I bought from Best Buy (their house brand) and I could not get the controller to connect to the software. I assume that you can not enter the majority of the setting in the software unless you 'connect' the controller? Since I wasn't able to make a connection, I was not able to see all the settings avaliable.

Were all of you using the adapter sold at Radio Shack?

I would imagine the Best Buy one would work just fine. Have you double checked that the correct comm port is being used on the Software conroller page? What operating system are you using?

I'll have to check which comm port I was trying to use when I get home from work. I believe it was using comm1 when the serial cable was selected. The operating system is XP Home.

LoneStarSa, I had some trouble at first as well. In my case, the laptop used COM4 (using Vista). I changed the serial connection to COM4 in the application. However, I still had the same problem as you.

When I first started, I had attached the controller to the PC via the serial then turned on the controller. The controller showed nothing on the LCD and the laptop would not make the connection.

Eventually, I disconnected the serial and unplugged/replugged the controller power supply. This time, the LCD showed a Data test, memory test, etc. Then I connected the serial cable, started up the software and connected to the controller. This time it worked. In my case, the order of physical connections between the Laptop and Controller seemed to affect the connection.

Yup. I just changed the com port number and was able to connect. So far so good. I am able to program the settings and save them to the controller!
