Rubbermaid Roughneck containers... safe, or not?

I tried checking the web sites for Lowes and HD, but only found the trash cans, not the tote-style containers. But maybe they have them in the stores and not on the web sites.

I agree about the brutes. I currently us the roughneck, and I haven't had any problems yet, but at 3/4 of the way filled (even 1/2 filled) the container starts to bow out about 3 inches. That may eventually give out. May not be today, may not be tomarrow, but imagine 20 gallons of salt water on your floor someday.

Considering how much plastic there is floating around on natural reefs these days, I'd say you are creating an artificial environment in your tank if you don't use tubs that leach plastic residues into the tank water. Do you want your inhabitants to feel comfortable or not?!?

It's a good thing it'll be in my laundry room in the basement, where a drain is in the immediate vicinity. ;)

Seriously, though... there has to be a better item than this to mix new water in, if bowing sides are an issue. Anyone have other suggestions instead of these Brute or Roughneck containers?

The Brutes WILL NOT BOW.

use the brutes. Theyre perfect for it.

The roughnecks have all the problems. Its not worth saving $10 over. (A 32g brute cost me $26)

I saw the Roughnecks at a local hardware store for $9 on clearance or something. That's why I asked about them. I guess I'll see if I can find the Brutes around here.

If you're just mixing up new water who cares if the sides bow? Despite what some have said I see no real risk of the thing blowing out or springing a leak. Like I said before, I'd be more concerned about it if I had water permanently in the thing (some of you may note that this means I should do more water changes...you're probably right :D).

That said...if you can find the Brutes the cost difference is probably not that great...just go with those.

Well, I was hoping to have water in there as an emergency stash of fresh saltwater in case something happened. But if it's only in there for a few hours I'm sure it'd be fine. But if I'm going to keep water in there for long periods of time, I'm thinking a different solution is in order.
