Hi all,

I am looking for information on using photos from the Internet and was hoping that some of you may no the rules. I am specifically looking for a picture of some of the states to use on a website. If the picture has no identifying remarks is it ok to use or is permission needed? Any and all info would be great. Thanks

Scott

First off you should always get the image owners permission.

Whether there are legal implications really depends on how you're using the image. If it's use is connected to anything even remotely commercial the creator of the image in entitled to compensation.

Doug,

Thanks for the quick response. So it is not like writing a book where you only need to cite the source as a reference.

Do you know where I can find some official documentation on this type of subject?

Thanks

Scott

Just to be absolutely perfectly clear: yes, you do need permission. Photos are the [intellectual] property of the photographer and protected by international copyright laws the moment the photo is created. That said, you should always ask before using just to obey the laws and to be polite. In many cases the photographer will allow you to use the photos, especially if you give credit in body of the webpage. If you're making a profit from the photo it's common curtesy to offer something in return.
This link will answer a lot of the basic copyright questions.
