Running a Pump Closed Loop - Pump Problem

I have a new problem. I'm going to use two Ocean Clear canister filters for mechanical filtiration on a closed loop. The problem is that my bulkheads are 3/4" in diameter and the pump I need to run the system is 1"-1". Of course the logical decision is to use an adapter to enlargen the tubing to 1" but would this actually work? I'm worried it would choke the pump since the source (bulkhead) is still 3/4" wide even though the tubing might be 1".

Of course there is a Gen-X pump that would do it without needing the adapter, the problem is I am looking for a quiet pump (mainly Pan World). Unless anyone know if Gen-X pumps are quiet?

why do you want to use the canister filters? cant you make your holes 1 inch?

It is not a SW tank, nitrates won't be a problem. ;)

I could make the holes bigger, but I'm looking for other options incase I need to switch things around in the future.
 
I've run Little Giant like that before eventhough you aren't supposed to. The thing is, if you reduce the input, you wont get full flow of the pump anyway so you may as well look for a 3/4" input pump. If you go with a pressure pump you won't lose much through the canister filters so that's another way to go with a smaller imput pump and get as much flow as possible.

They require between 600-1200 gph. But I'm going to run two in a series, hence not sure if I should be aiming towards 1200 gph or where.

You can put a ball valve on the outlet of the pump and throttle the flow if necessary.

That's another reason why I'm over-aiming, even though it's only a 90G tank.


DarG, I've heard the less head pressure working agains the pump, the quieter it is?

That's probably true but that doesnt necessarily make a pressure rated pump louder in and of itself. I have 3 Pan Worlds, all pressure rated and all are very quiet pumps. So those canister filters are going to present whatever backpressure there is to any pump you choose, pressure rated or not.
 
Could I use one pump before the two canisters and then another after it to help the flow? Both the same model, probably something dead-silent like an Eheim.
 
I don't think you can use a pump after the canisters because the input is going to be restricted and it isn't going to do any good. Having a pump pull on what another one is pushing isnt going to ultimately get you any more flow, it won;t make the first pump, pump and more water. Think about the Velocity centrifugal pumps. The Velocity T3 is high pressure rated, 3/4" in and out and one of the quietest pumps you can buy. Water cooled so it does heat the water up a bit though. They aren't very expensive either. But again, the Pan World pumps are quiet.
 
i am not sure how the canister filters work.......but if you run them in paralell......you should be fine. Put a T in pipe and run side to one canister and other pipe to other canister....hope this helps
