Running a solana

What do you guys run on a solana tank to make it a successful reef? I have decided to keep the tank as it is without removing the back wall and drilling it. I can run 2 reactors for GAC and GFO. Being the tank skimmerless, what could I use to replace a skimmer? Or should I go with a hang on back skimmer like the JNS VS1 Hang-On-Back Protein Skimmer? Besides running GAC and GFO, should I still try to use chemi-pure, purigen and all that?

I just found a good deal on a Solana without the back wall so I'm going to buy a 700 glass holes kit and drill the tank.

Now the question is, where do I drill it? I mean, how low from the top of the tank does the return and the drain have to be drilled? How far apart the return from the drain? Do these have to be offset?
