Running in reverse

I had an interesting thought the other day...

I have a peninsula style tank with two MP40s against the non-visible wall, one close to the left wall, and one close to the right wall.

Here's a picture to give an idea, the right wall is the one closer, the left one farther. The right MP40 is located just to the left of the glare you can see on the left side of the picture, the left in a similar place on the opposite side of the back wall. There is approximately a two inch gap between the inner wall of the tank and the wet side of the pump.

If i turn the right wall pump up to 100%, flow starts to disturb the sand bed about a foot to a foot and a half away from the back wall were the pump is located, but only on the right side. The left side pump doesn't do this at all. And by disturb I mean pick up the sand and move it, mostly down the length of the tank and into the rockwork. If left on long enough, it will dig out the entire bed.

If I move the pump up any farther than where it is, the churning of the water over the pump causes water to slosh out of the tank. This isn't a problem for the pump on the left wall either.

So I had a thought about what might be causing this, and I think its because the propeller of the pump is turning counter clockwise imparting some spin into the water that is forcing the flow right into the tank wall. Thus, when the pump is placed high in the water, that flow goes up and over the side, and when placed low in the tank, the water is forced down into the sand bed.

On the other side, the spin imparted by the propeller would spin the water right into the middle of the tank, way from the tank wall.

I hope that explanation made sense.

Now my questions.

Do you think my explanation would account for what I am seeing?

Assuming it does, I thought there might be a way to reverse the direction of the spin of the propeller, but I do realize this would take a electrical modification to the pump itself as well as creating a new propeller made to turn in a clockwise direction.

Is this possible, and is this practical for the limited number of people it may help?

If you need any further pictures or information, I'd be happy to provide them.

Thanks.

Hi Gobie-

The pump does spin counter-clockwise when facing the propeller, so perhaps you're on to something. That being said, manufacturing a version that spins the opposite direction would require quite a big investment, so this is unlike to happen.
