Running MP40 Without Rubber Gasket?

I'm having a real tough time eliminating the vibration coming from my MP40w. I would run smooth but when it changes speed, I hear the vibration. If I fixed it by aligning the pumps in the lower speed, the higher speed will vibrate and vice versa. Very annoying....

When I took the rubber gasket out and just run the dry side right at the glass(I have the pin spacing of course), the problem seem to go away.

What is the long term effect of running it without a rubber gasket? Or even better, what do I need to do to get rid of this vibration noise!

I would not run the pump without the gasket. How old is the pump? You may need a new drive shaft.

I bought the pump about a year ago. I've just replaced the wet side about a month ago and ever since then, it keeps on making noise.

Could you elaborate on this statement? What could happen if not using the gasket? I have the same problem and also removed the rubber gasket, with great success. It has been off for about 6 months with no adverse effects..

i am also curious as im fighting this same issue with mp40w with 3/8" glass. i was instructed in an earlier thread by ecotech to remove the rubber spacer for install. these pumps are roughly 3 weeks in use, 1 of the 2 seems ok, but the other one vibrates hard at the higher speeds no matter how much i adjust the wet side.

dont want to highjack your thread, just seems like similiar situation...

The only issue I am aware of is when they are used on a 3/4" tank. Since you can’t use a pin spacer on that thick of a tank you need the gasket otherwise the motor would be in direct contact with the tank wall. That’s a big no-no and I learned that one the hard way.

this is the answer i got from ecotech when i asked this question a couple of weeks ago...

"the instructions have this comment:

"There is no need to use this spacer on glass thicknesses of 1/4" (6.4mm) or 3/8" (9.5mm)."

i have 3/8" glass on my 125. is this comment meant as "your choice" or "dont". does it hurt anything one way or the other?

You do not use the spacer for 1/4" or 3/8" thick tanks, it won't work properly with it. QUOTE]

I was having a lot of vibration and noise from the pump until I found out that I had the spacer measured wrong. I changed the spacer to make it farther away from the tank and it took the noise and vibration away. I'm running on an acrylic tank and I have the spacer set one below the farthest setting. I believe you need that rubber gasket for a couple reasons but I don't think it has to do with the noise.

SmyrnaReefer- That instruction refers to the MP10 model, the MP40 is different and the original poster is asking about the MP40.

The rubber gasket really should be used with the pump as it prevents vibration and scratches.

I bought a tank from a local and the mp40 doesnt have a gasket on it. Is there anyway to get a replacement?

This thread is several years old.........LOL. I started to read it and thought..... oh no! the new MP40's are having some issues, scared me for a minute, till I saw the date. LOL. I would start a new thread and ask your question as opposed to replying to a 2011 thread. I think you can order these "rubber gaskets from Ecotech directly.
