I belong to NFC in Oak Ridge and it's really nice... It is a bit more spendy than the Rush though... But it has a lot better facilities IMO...

I'm with your wife... I hate running... I'm only doing it because of all the beer and increase in age and waist size... ;)

Randy,
I am a member also but I have never seen you there before. Odd.

I actually like running. I really did not start running until I hit 30 then quit. Now I run again. Two years ago I started running and I could do a 5k in 35 minutes. Pretty sad huh?
I did get down to under 25 minutes though within a year. I quit running again due to back issues but am starting again. I can run a 5k in 29 minutes and figure I will continue to improve. Like you Mel I am not fast but I could probably run a half marathon.

There is something in Men's Health this month about ways to cut time. I will have to find it for you but basically you take the time it takes for you to run 3 miles, divide by 3 and subtract 30 seconds. This is your goal time. Then you run for 3 - 4 minutes at that time and then at the slower pace for 2 and repeat.

When I first started running my starting rate was 5.5 mph but over time I got it to 6.2 mph starting and within a minute was up to the 7's.

One other thing I noticed is when I first started running it would take me 15 minutes to get into a comfort zone. Now even though I have not run much in the last 6 months it only takes around 5 -6 minutes? Anyone else like this.

Again I am not the fastest guy but I also don't throw up after I run like some people

You need to start coming when they open at 5am!!!! :D Once in a while I'll go after work/class... I've seen Dave Stevens (stevensmd) there a few times... Saw him last week actually...

I use to meet my trainer there at 5 am. No one is there and none of the equipment has that sweaty grease residue.

Working out at 5 am gave a good feeling all day long but .... it is 5 am after.

The hardest part was eating something so early so not to pass out from lifting.

Uuuugh...I haven't even looked at this thread because I've been such a lazy slug. Actually I'm taking a week off on purpose because of my foot and because I'm not going to run on my crappy shoes again.

I made an appointment and am getting the doctor at Runners Market to look at my feet/figure out what shoes I need. Then I'm full speed ahead on the running again.

Even though it's a planned week, I still feel like a POS.

End result: possible stress fracture in my small foot bones on the right side = no running for 4 more WEEKS. Great. Just when I was getting comfortable too.

He said I can cycle and do the elliptical machine, so I think I'll be ok fitness-wise, but as for the half marathon...it's not looking as likely as I'd hoped. Good thing I never registered!

I did find some great shoes at Runners Market. They will give you a discount if you're UT staff or a student!

edit: how the heck it's ok for me to do the elliptical machine is BEYOND me.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. You will need the full 4 weeks, too. I ran on mine after a 3-week break and messed 'em up good.

Eliptical isn't as high impact since your foot never leaves the glider... Sucks about the stress fracture... Ashley joined the Knoxville Track Club to get her discount...

Yeah, it sucks. I was so ridiculously disappointed that I could barely talk when the guy was telling me.

I sort of stuttered a couple of things but otherwise was shocked.

I'm sure I seemed really stupid but I wasn't expecting him to tell me all that. Apparently I walk a bit pigeon-toed with my right foot and I've been running really regularly lately, causing a ton of pressure on the small bones on the right side of my foot. That's made them really strained/possibly stress fractured.

I'm doing ok with it now (emotionally speaking) because I used to really love cycling anyways, so this will be a chance to get back into that. I went on Saturday and enjoyed it (although not nearly as much as when a couple of my friends used to teach class a couple of years ago, and when Cristina was here, going to classes with me).

6.19 miles 55 min... May not be the best time for true runners, but I'm really happy with it... ;) I'm not even sore and could have run farther...

Whimp!!!!!!!!!! :D I just started running again the week before New Years... Took me 25 min to run 2 miles and I was sore for the next 2 weeks... I'll improve... ;)

I still hate running with a passion...

I miss it like I never thought I would.

I'm dying to get back to it...so much so that I'm trying to evaluate if my foot is healed early, maybe.

Ashley ran the Country Music Half Marathon today... Her chip time was 1h 48m 59s... She finished 1178 out of 22749 overall, 291/14505 for females, and 64/2170 for her division... She paced 8:19 per mile... :eek1: Very proud of her, especially considering it was her first half marathon... :p

Wow, congrats to Ashley; sounds like it was a great run!

My brother Andrew and his girlfriend ran out there today too, although I haven't heard from them yet!

I haven't been running in a while, even though I really like it, but the pedometer says I walk ~8 miles a day at the hatchery, so that's my justification for continued cookie-eating ;)

I am back into stride running, but have a ways (and at least 10 pounds) to go before I attempt to run another road race -- my first since college. I have a time-per-mile goal in mind that I must achieve before I do a 5 mile or 10K race. That is about my distance limit, I think -- marathons and the like hold no more interest for me.

This morning, I physically wore myself out running. I haven't been able to do that in a while. Usually a knee or ankle or back complains when I push it too hard. Then again, the 1-1/2 hours of Ultimate Frisbee in the sun yesterday may have contributed to the feeling. On top of that, I have basketball tonight. I am going to sleep early and be sore tomorrow.

P.S. That was a good half-marathon time for Ashley. I'm impressed.

I knocked out 5 miles this morning... I slacked off in May since I was out of school and only got to workout maybe twice a week... Now I'm back up to 4 or 5 days, but I need to get back to 6... :(

Oh, and Ashley is a freaking addict... She has run a 5k and 10k since then, and is signed up for few more 5K's... She's going to run the half @ Chickamagua this fall... She's trying to get her time down...
