Running Thread

I got hooked on Ultimate in college. I've played pick-up games here or there since, but not much lately. Occasionally I can get my sunday school class (a bunch of teenagers) to play. They get frustrated with me because I know the rules and try to make them play by them. :) The also get frustrated because I am old enough to be their father and can still out-run them and definitely handle the disc better than they can. :D Old people power! The older I get, the better I used to be!

As for "Frisbee" golf, I never played the modern version of it. I just played around my neighborhood as a teenager. I was quite amused about a decade later when I discovered it had been made into a sport with different weight discs. I have yet to try it out, though. Victor Ashe has a really nice course and I've been tempted a few times.

Yeah, Victor Ashe has one of the best courses in the Southeast. I've got a half dozen of the 'fancy' frisbees if you wanted to give it a whirl some weekend (pun intended). :)

Well, I actually ran yesterday for the first time in a while.

I did ok. I haven't been managing my time at all though. I'm just trying to get back into it regularly then I'll worry about time. I don't know if I should manage it from the beginning or not, but I'm not going to do it yet.

Randy...I run a bunch of 5Ks but they're always in the fall/winter.

Welcome back to the world of running, Mel. :)

And Joel, I might have to take you up on that. Golf isn't my thing, but disc golf I could get into.

Welcome back to the world of running, Mel. :)

Thanks Scott.

I've started bringing my running stuff with me to work, thinking that I would like to start running at Island Home greenway on my way home.

I really enjoyed it in January when I was running a lot.

Plus, a bunch of it is shaded.

Giving a shout out to my gal Kimberly... She ran her first 5K this morning at Cove Lake...

Garrett, Kim, Ashley and I all participated and then had breakfast at Cracker Barrel afterward to celebrate!!! :D

It was good times and fun for all... :p

Cool. I have about another month of training before I feel ready to make my road race debut. I have been holding off until I can run at a pace I can live with. :)

I've actually started throwing in a spin class once a week to mix up my training.

Anyway, enjoy the race. I am heading out for a slow and easy 7-mile run shortly.

And congrats to Mrs. Hoskins on a new PR... :D Cracker Barrel was yummy, you should have came... We had an awesome waitress this time!!!

Spin classes are fun... I usually go to the one at my gym on Saturdays at 8... Obviously didn't make it today, but I don't think I need it anyhow... ;)

Spin class is a bunch of stationary bikes in a room with a drill seargent-like woman screaming instructions and yelling at you for slacking off. It is great. :)

I found out that I could build up my stamina much better there than in running. And I can push myself hard without worrying so much about my ankle and knee getting hurt. It has really got me over the hump and moving up in running speed.

Yeah. We used say that if you could cycle hard a few times a week you could definitely run a 5K. Back when I was cycling a lot I never ran for exercise much but that's when I was doing a million 5Ks.

Those were the days...the non-flabby days.

Heh. I am now Coach Scott. We have formed an elementary-aged cross-country team with the Knoxville Track Club (oop - still need to register) and I have been dubbed one of the coaches. We just started practice this week. It is fun to see 8~10 year olds running. My youngest is taking it very seriously. Then again, he is the one that tries to immitate me (the oldest does the opposite).

Ashley and I ran the Haw Ridge Trail Race yesterday... 7 miles... We finished about 1:11, which I thought was pretty awesome... I turned my left ankle, and have a blister on the ball of my right foot, but Ashley is happy... :D

Here's a pic of Kim and Ashley that the photographer took at the Karns 5k a couple weeks ago...
