Hello Mario,

The hairs that you have noticed are normal oxidation which occurs below the magnets protective layer, per your instruction manual. These magnets typically need replacement at the 18 month mark. However, the magnet which has a bubble may need replacement, simply email us at service@ecotechmarine.com and we'll take care of your support request.

Limpit-

did they replace your magnets?

Yes, EcoTech sent me a replacement magnet but it had nicks on the edge that will soon turn into rust bubbles I'm sure. :(

Here's what my old magnet looked like with less than 3 months on it.

That part of the magnet does not touch the glass.
I don't even want to think of what rust went into my SPS tank though.

well guys i got 2 new magnets and after a month the new ones already have bubbles on them... I will post pictures tomorrow, are we supose to bother these guys every month for a year to get new magnets, i hope they come up with a permanent solution, i have an sps tank too and i am afraid of whatever these will do to quality of water..... hope ecotech chimes in and gives us a reply...

I wouldn't worry too much about it, there might be some other side effects, but you won't have mass die off.

I don't know how long mine has been like this, but when I found out the EcoTech/Icecap guys fixed it right up. But I think this can arguably be more rusted than any of the above pictures.

Wow! never seen one that bad.

As for rust, pretty much the same as putting phosban in your tank.

This granular ferric oxide hydroxide filter media absorbs phosphates from saltwater and freshwater. Also absorbs silicates and dissolved organics. Does not leach absorbed substances and does not affect water pH. Long lasting and easy way to control phosphate levels permanently.

Ferric Oxide:

One entry found.

Main Entry: ferric oxide
Function: noun
Date: 1851
: the red or black oxide of iron Fe2O3 found in nature as hematite and as rust and also obtained synthetically and used especially in magnetic materials, as a pigment, and for polishing
