Rusty stand?

Towards the end of my 40 breeder's lifetime, some water from the sump splashed on the bottom of the metal stand. It looks to be just as strong as when I got it, but the outer layer of the bottom is covered in a bit of rust.

Is this stand still safe to use? The tank will not have more than an inch of water in it, I'm setting up a rainforest exhibit for some poison dart frogs, mostly plants and fiber/foam it won't weigh that much.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't even think twice about it. you might want to scrape off any loose rust just so you know for sure how rusted it is, but if it's just surface rust i wouldn't even worry about it.

Takes a long time for something to rust thru... just scrape it down like Shy said and throw some rusoleum on it :)

Yeah, its just rusting on the outside, the inner steel/structure itself is rock solid. A lot of the rust went away from just wiping down with a towel, but some would need to be scraped off.

Anyway, the tank with only an inch of water is going to be a fraction of what it used to weigh, so I'm not worried.. just wanted to figure out a way to clean it somehow. Thanks for the help, I'll get back to cleaning the coralline from the old tank.

I use a wire brush attached to a drill - they sell them everywhere.

Quick going over then rustoleum paint.

Wear glasses when using the brush though, metal shards in the cornea is no fun.
