so this green grasslike fern is growing out of my filter, i assume its some kind of macroalgae but im not sure. is this a good sign or a bad one. right now it looks cool but i will have to remove it before it spreads off the filter. just wanted to know if this said anything bout the condition of the tank:strooper:

Sort of sounds like Caulerpa. Does it look like this?

That is a form that is usually not traded as it is more of a nuisance than anything. I wasn't saying that is what it all looks like but it sounds like what he is describing.

1) what sthe macro look like
2) what type filter....
and here is the part that gets people ranting........
I would live it alone and let it grow....its eating all the extra nutrients and possible nitrate you have...ofcourse, dont let it get out of control but I would keep it...almost liek an algea turf/mat filter...anyway...just IMO

EAGLES, there's lots of different species of caulerpa, you are probably more familiar with grape caulerpa, the kind with little spheres. The one Allen posted is feather caulerpa, it is a little bit slower growing (though not much). Then, there's also razor, microfeather, brachypus and many other leaf shapes.

gibbs, another possibility for "fernlike" could be bryopsis. This is not as desirable an algae. Here are 2 pics, but there are many different looks for this algae as well, many different species:
