S. Gigantea might be pregnant.....

So a lot has changed recently, my green S. Gigantea\Haddoni hybrid is no longer in our system, and when I was removing him he stress spawned... for the time.. and he stress spawned a LOT.

Fast forward to today. I was walking by my tank and I always get a great unadulterated view of my purple S. Gigantea's underside. I'm used to the purple verracue, some striping, but I noticed what looked like a burn blister on your hand when it bubbles up. In this case the bubbles are clear and I can see through them. I also see some dark matter where the oral disc meets the column, striping. I tried to take as good of pictures as possible, but the bubble'ish part is between 11-1 o'clock on the pictures. If you look more toward 2-5 o'clock that's the normal purple verracue for comparison, and the striping is between 6-9 o'clock. Three very distinct features to be seen. my clock references above aren't perfect, but you gig people will figure it out :beer:

I didn't think anything of it, but when the stress spawn happened, I walked by the tank and saw my clowns buried around the mouth area of the purple, and didn't see the purples mouth for the rest of that day.

This might be absolutely nothing, but in the last almost 1.5 yrs I have had the purple in our system, I have NEVER seen these bubbles before... Just thought I would document it for the group.

im pretty sure its just from growth of the anemone.

Anemones hold eggs in the gonads or in the tentacles when they are ready to be released.

I very well may be completely off my rocker, but this is the only time I have ever seen this, and working at home I get to stare at my tank for most of the entire day. I would've spotted this type of look at some point in the last year+.... So who knows, just figured I would document it even if I am totally wrong.

You may very well be right, but in the course of looking at this Gig, and I mean every time I walk by this tank I've never seen those clear bumps before. The only time is 6 days after a massive stress spawn from the green.

Who knows, but figured it's worth bringing up to the community. How much do we know about their reproduction as a species?

We know that they brood their young internally and release fully formed miniature baby anemones.

I agree that the bubble-like structures look like normal verracue to me.

One can always hope I've stumbled upon something else! I'll keep watching and update if something else develops...

I got 5 Gigantea in my reef. There bound to be at least 1 male and 1 female in that group. Actually I got a 1/16 (6.25%) chance of having either all males or all females.
I am feeding them twice a week and doing a lot of water change. I hope to have them spawn sometiem in the future.
Like Phil wrote, they brood their young internally and release, egress through the mouth, fully form babies. If I start to sell babies Gigantea for 100 dollars a pop, you all know where they come from

I am pretty sure you will need a moon simulator to breed Gigs.

I got EcoSmart Live. EcoTech have a build in Lunar simulator so I am all good there.
