Ok looking for some more inputs.

Currently I have the 400 G tank up and running in my garage. Here is the way my pumps are set up.

I have a CL run by a hammerhead that also incorporaites a swimming pool filter. The current setup as two strainer inputs in the bottom of the tank, centered front to back, about 1 1/2 feet in from each end. That feeds the pump which feeds the filter. The return goes back into the overflow box and exits thru 4 jacussi jets, two on either side of the overflow box which has angled sides. I want to keep this setup as is, other than possibly adding 90 degree elbows at the returns to have the water flow across the back of the tank, behind the rocks. Maybe even add eductors to them to increase the flow.

I have a second hammerhead that is my return pump. Currently water goes in the center overflow box, thru a 2 inch durso pipe and enters a 30 G skimmer sump. The skimmer output flows into a 90 G sump into a LR bin. The overflow of the 30 G sump flows into the 90 G sump into what will become a refuge area. The return pump is connected to the 90 G sump and currently returns the water thru 2 UV filters and into 2 manifolds at the top of the tank, each with 4 openings.

I want to change this to one return line with no UV filter and have them go into 4 bulkhead fittings located near the top of the tank along the back wall. I'm also comtenplating adding eductors on to these to increase the water movement inside the tank. I may also add in some lock line so that I can position them in certian areas to increas water movement throughout the tank.

This next system is what I want to add. I would like to add a surge tank to one end of the system. The tank is 30" wide and I am wonder weather to use 2 - 1 inch lines evenely spaced across the width or one large 2 inch line centered on that end. I'm looking at possibly 2 - 20 G tanks or one 30 g tank. It all depends on how much room I have.

I will probably use a small powerhead to fill the tank, put it on a timmer so that it only runs during the day. I currently do this with my CL and everything seems to work well.

One other question on the surge tanks. Would it be benificial to add LR to the surge tanks? Possibly adding filteration and a supply of pods to the tank.

With this setup, it should give me water flow across the back of the tank aimed towards each end, flow from the top back of the tank aimed towards the front of the tank and a surge flow across the tank from end to end.

Any inputs, ideas, criquetes are welcome. Thanks for the help. I'm almost ready to tear down the tank and move it to it's permanant spot so I want to wrok out these last few details.

It sounds great to me but I have no experience with actually building a surge tank. I do know that the aquarium in Waikiki utilizes a large one on their reef and it was very impressive.

I would definitely play with a pair of eductors to see if you like the flow they put into your tank. If you like them, you can always add more. What are you trying to keep in this tank exactly?

I have some very large tangs in there currently along with some swallow tail angels and wrasses. I want to add some mates for the swallow tails I have. The coral stocking plan is to dominate the upper part of the rocks with Monti caps, one of each color that I can get. The lower half/sand bed will have some clams and my large toadstool leather along with my 7 year old pearl bubble. I'll fill in the other spots with zoas, rics and shrooms.

I currently have eductors on the returns on my 72 G bowfront and like them. I'm using the largets ehiem pump, 1000 GPh for my return and that is all I have for flow. That's why i tried the eductors. It increases the flow without a bunch of powerheads hanging in the tank.
