Saban takes the job.

So it's not reef related, but definetly related to this forum. :) Saban is UA's new head coach. It's good to see proper order restored in this state. :)

Im glad to see UA get someone that is acctually going to step in and take the program to what it is capable of. I also have a feeling that he is going to be around awhile. Im betting he wouldnt take the job unless Mal Moore and the rest of the athletic directors are going to give him the room he wants and not question him on every little change. He's going to be a good thing for UA...... oh and I am an Auburn fan and I still think its a good thing for the school.

I've been a Bama fan since the 70's, not an easy thing to do in east Tennessee.
I've got two request...1. Leave the man in the job long enough to see if he can do it. 2. By whatever means neccessary, please stomp the Vols...

Reefbones check your stats before making the statement about Saban. Tubs record is 3 wins and 2 loses against Saban.

"Saban has told some peers within the league that coaching at Alabama was always his dream job. While his ego and professional pride pulled him in the direction of finishing the job that had barely begun in Miami, he felt he couldn't pass up what he considers still to be one of the most prestigious and history-filled jobs in college football -- leading the Crimson Tide, back in the powerful SEC, which he knows so well."

He'll go elsewhere before half of his contract has elapsed.

Possible, but he's pretty well burned his bridges to the NFL. He'd most likely have to jump ship to another college team - and among them I can only think of a handful that might interest him.

It seems as though Saban has set himself up to finish his career at Bama.

While the NFL is out for him I'm sure he'll be on the shortlist if Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll, etc. ever get lured away from their schools.

I'm glad UA got him. I'll echo BPHILLIPS and hope they leave him there long enough to do what he needs to do and get some discipline over there.

Rollin, I was thinking the same thing about Stoops and Carroll. The only other I could see would be replacement for Wies, but I think he's going to be at ND for at least the extent of his contract, which to quote the announcers during last nights game is "herculean."

lol... actually, Herculean was the phrase used to describe Weis's buyout clause to keep others from hiring him out from under them, as well as preventing him leaving some other way, like him quitting or them firing him.

Hmmm...I thought Herculean was describing the effort it takes to get Weis into those pants. Or maybe a description of the lifting power of the special jet ND flies on. Try a salad, Charlie. Talk about overrated.

Saban hasn't been happy anywhere yet - I don't know why you seem to think he'll be happy in Tuscaloosa, especially once the meddling starts. And before you answer $32MM will buy a lot of happy, just remember that there is likely to be significant wage inflation among top college coaches over the next few years and (especially if he is successful) someone will come along and offer him a lot more.

Saban was happy @ LSU, according to what he said today. I don't know that I've ever read a quote from him saying otherwise.

I figured he went to the NFL b/c it was the next logical step in his career and is normally a goal for most coaches to make it that far. He tried it, and decided he didn't like it.

Anyways, when did I ever say he would be happy in Tuscaloosa? I don't recall ever making that statement. I don't think money can buy happiness, but I do believe that the Alabama landscape and lifestyle are more similar to what he grew up around. It's also much closer to his vacation house in N. GA - not to mention he's already said that Alabama was his dream job all along. I think these factors will keep him here for a while.

Another note to make is that it's been reported he would have complete control over the program, aka no meddling. Just one more reason me thinks he'll stay a while.

Buyout, quitting, or being fired...what other way could he leave the program besides those 3?

You'll of course forgive me if I don't believe anything that comes out of his mouth at this point.

He didn't like being the number 2 in Michigan, so he left Michigan State. He was the only fish in the pond in Louisiana, but felt unappreciated even after winning his NC. I don't blame him for wanting to leave Miami. Here's a question for you, though. Ostensibly, he lied about his lack of interest in the Alabama job because Huizenga said he'd fire Saban on the spot if he found out he was talking to anyone from the university. Considering he was on a slow boat to nowhere with the Dolphins, why wouldn't he talk, given that to stay quiet would mean risking missing out on his 'dream job'?

Seriously, I saw that 'dream job' line yesterday and thought it was absolutely priceless. Some people will buy anything.

BTW, if you go back to each stop in his head coaching career, the scenario is basically like this one. He's denied and lied, then shown up at the new job talking about how much he's wanted it. Three years, four tops.
