Sacramento Gyre Discussion

I have my gyre mounted about 1/2" from my water line and love the turbulence it creates in my tank. I could not do that with my mp10's as they would suck in air if mounted that close to the water line. So far so good, I just hope it lasts. Btw, I don't live in Sac but my parents live in El Dorado Hills so I sorta qualify to be in this thread, haha!

Tom, you right about what I'm saying. I agree with Brandon I don't think it's a big deal. Just interesting.

I'm going to adjust my apex to shut down the gyre for a few hours at night and just run the WP 40 pulses around the clock.

100% moves some water for sure, at the far end of the tank I would prefer a touch more power. I'm impressed with the area of flow and how well things keep moving.

I'm ok with the 150, but I will consider the larger size when it's available. If I had a 8' SPS tank I would consider the larger size a must.

What about two 150s on opposite sides of an 8' tank? There would be some chaos in the middle but that sounds good!

I'm sure that would work too. My goal is to keep the open end of my peninsula free of power heads. For me part of the Gyre's allure is the possibility of handling all water movement with a single pump.

I actually haven't scaped my tank since I set it up. I have some more rock cooking right now in the garge. When I put the rocks in I have my main goal was not dropping them. Once I figure out the best placment for the gyre I'm going scape it.

The only issue I have is I would like to run the gyre higher but the flow is too much for my Acans. Maybe I can scape a deadspot into the tank to make it work. On my size tank i'm sure I could run just one if I can keep it at like 30-40%. Right now I'm having to keep it at like 10-20%.

^^^ Tom, that I what I am taking/understanding from Jeff's comment. I also wonder if reducing the speed might help. That way the pump isn't sucking stuff into it without giving it a chance to find it's way into the overflow.

Sorry, missed that, I more than likely will get the larger one once available
too and put it at the opposite end of the overflow pushing stuff to the overflow.

thanks for sharing all!

Tom

Btw, if everyone is saying the smaller one out now is very powerful I am hoping it will replace the two mp60s I have in the front of the tank so no more pump sticking in front.

i am going to sell one of my mp60 and keep the other. This sucker can really move some water.

Shipping out my mp40 today.

Pretty much set on running gyre on right side glass horizontally at 10-30%... Mp10 in back left side down towards the bottom of tank at about 50% on reef crest. Things are nice and quiet and flow is great.

let us know how this works out. I am only running one MP60 on my tank and looks to be okay. When I came out to see you and your tank, you suggested to add another MP60 at the least. If this Gyre can do what two MP60's can do, I will be all over this new pump. :D

So I went and picked one of these up at aquarium depot and I got my picture taken with my daughter for being the first customer to get one at the store. The picture was posted at the ad Facebook site with the full retail price $299.99 in the description. Long story short my wife saw it in Facebook. Busted! Let's just say she had a wonderful time at the crawfish factory restaurant at foothills tonight. I had to peel most of the crab she ate. Lol.

I had the pump installed and set at full blast pulse mode. It moves a lot of water but it is not a broad range. I am very happy with the footprint and will purchase another one for my frag tank. I am planning to put 2 tunze on either side of the pump for good measure.

That's pretty funny.

Not the best pictures but you get the idea. FYI, i can hear the hum of the pump at full blast pulse mode.
Before the switch sometime not too long ago

After the switch today

Glenn, above 40/50% the gyre is start making noticeable noise. At least on couple that I have access too. So im setting it up around that quite zone. I still have my mp40s and just using apex to alternate betwween them. Are you running full blast at 100%? The pulse mode is kinda loud too.

Yes, I only have one pump in that side so I am running it at 100%. The pulse mode is loud but not as loud as 3 mp60s on full blast. LOL.

Hmmm, it's cheaper than the pumps they are replacing you should tell her (but then you'll be busted for the other pumps). Or she could get it for you for Christmas? LOL

(unless she wants a Christmas present in kind LOL)

Like it, looks a lot neater and has a much smaller foot print!

I am now thinking about getting the gyre 170 when it comes out in the first quarter of next year and moving this 150 in my frag tank. I am assuming the 170 will be longer and will cover more of the width of my tank.
