im sooo bummin!!!came home to find my marine betta dead!i had this fish since the beginningof my reef adventure.did my 90 gallon around this fish with big caves in the middle of the stack.this fish was always out in the open lights never seemed to bother him.he was fine yesterday.i did a 30 gallon water change but everything matched up and all other fish seem ok-corals look good.i have really cut back on feedings but he always got shrimp or scallops every couple days.when i pulled him out he didnt look skinny.was about 6 inches could it have just been his time??my 4 year old daughter burst into tears when she seen me checking it out. even my wife seemed sad she liked that fish.cant someone in your cult get you another one she says?? :mixed: its gonna be a bad day

Sorry to hear of your loss. I hate it when a prized member of our reefs and family passes. It could have been his time.....

Sorry Jim, I know I was a little blue the day after my Toby died... I'll prolly be sad too, when Mr. A-holes goes. Nothing like losing one of your first fish after years and years... Folks here know what you're going through.

Sorry Jim, I'm sure most of us can relate to your loss. If you're in fishkeeping long enough, you'll probably wind up loosing one of your favorites.

thanks guys kinda opens some doors tho.now maybe i can get some shrimp or some smaller fish that i was hesitant on getting before.got that fish for like 30 bucks cuz he wasnt priced at petworld

sorry man, that was a friggin sweeeet fish.. sweet price too!! youll figure somethin to put in there..why not some colorful anthias??!! thoses are always awesome looking..

That really sucks, I had a chocolate chip star from the beginning of my first tank (kept me out of reef tanks for a long time). I probably had it for three years and it died along with all my other livestock when I went overseas. I was really bummed when I heard about it, and it didn't even have a brain.
Those are some cool fish; do you think they mimic a moray eel? I have not seen a marine beta for sale in years.

thanks everyone.brian they are for sale at the shops here all the time.he would flare up occasionaly if i walked up to the tank quick but didnt have any fish that were a threat to him.

hey jimmer sorry to here about your loss I just recently purchased one and it seems to be eating now I hope to have it as long as you had yours.

Hi jimmer,

Sorry for your lost. I know what you mean. I lost mine today at 12:30h. :( :(
He/she was in my QT tank with a Powder Blue Tang. Until yesterday at evening everything was OK. The fish eated a piece of fresh mussel and a ghost shrimp on monday (It arrived last friday) and are active and smart.
I arrived form work yesterday at night and went into QT room... The betta was swiming from one side to another of the tank and seems pretty agressive. I think it was chasing its reflect on the bottom glass (BB QT tank) and had lost some scales on its head. It was very I turned the lights of and wait some time to do my aspirating job of the QT. When I turned the lights on, the looks very bad, with the tail torned and breathing very heavy, like it had something in its throat....almost no reflection even for a speeping fish. I did my job and closed the top of the tank because earlier It was going near the surface ans I think it could jump in the morning.
After sometime, before I went to sleep, I decided to take a look on the fishes... well I found the betta on the floor, almost dry. It was still alive, but died minutes later. Really a bad, bad day!

Sorry for the long message, for my english and for the inconvenience of posting in your society board.

Regards,

Marcelo.

:( sorry marcelo.mine went quick too.was fine the nite before and lights out and the next morning they he lay.its interesting what you say about having something in his throat.the day before mine died i was breaking up a shrimp and one of the fish pulled it from my finger and the betta got a fairly big piece.he would often take the food and go hide to spit it in and out of his mouth.are you gonna try another one in the future??good luck and thanks for sharing.

Mac,

Thank you very much. You're very gentle. I will really appreciate the day when my english become that good!

I'm still stunted by the death of this fish! It's behaviour changed from day to night in a manner I never seemd before! From a gentle - almost passive - to a stressed and agressive fish, swiming back and forth and trying to jump! In the distribuitor I got him the tank was open top and I never heard of a Marine betta that jumped out of the tank (or any other fish that did that with the lights off when they are expected to be sleeping).

When I was cleaning the QT and turned the lights on, the betta are breathing very heavy and open their mouth to the extreme sometimes. He/she was so patic that i can take it out of the rocks with my hands and he stay upside down where i left it.

...at least the powder blue are doing well. It's my third attempt with PBT and I think it'll be in my tank at the end of the month.

Regards,

marcelo.

very sad day

very sad day

Hi Jimmer,

Thank you! If you allow me to hitchhike your topic a little I like to make some questions.

I really don't understand what happened. The betta started a weird behaviour at night. First he/she looks like freightned and I think the problem was PBT agression, but after some time watching what are happening I saw that PBT looked more freightned by the Marine Betta behaviour than any other thing. The betta appers to be swiming against its own reflection on the bottom and sides of the tank. Have you ever seen your betta doing that? I also never heard that it's a jumper.
They and a small black molly fish (live food) was the only fishes in the 55 gallon QT so I think they have enough space (PBT is 2 and a half inches and the betta is 4 inches).
After sometime i returned the molly was gone and the betta appears to be gasping. The molly was there since saturday and I can't find it anyware so I concluded the betta eat it. The betta become more and more "nervous" and gasping. I turned the lights off to avoid more lesions (he/she lost some scales near the head). After one hour, when i turned the lighs on it appers to be sedated.

I'm thinking in try another one but they are difficult to find in Brazil. I always admired marine bettas but never had one until this unfortunate experience. A problem i realized is that they are (at least mine was) very slow to take food. It could be a problem because I have a Harlequin tuskfish and a large Zebrassoma desjardinii (the size of a dessert dish) that are very agressive feeders.
Was yours slow to take food too? Was it very shy (hidden most of the time)?

Marine betta is one of my favorites! Shame on me to let the beautiful poor creature die...

Best regards,

marcelo.
