Sad, sad Morning

I'm looking forward to the day when someone (or some equipment/aquarium manufacturer) comes up with a tank that looks as slick and streamlined as the rimless tanks, but with some kind of lowprofile or otherwise modern-looking canopy or netting (but of course accommodating the lighting somehow). Some people have done a nice job DIY-ing these sorts of things, but it would be nice to be able to buy it off the shelf, like one can with ELOS systems and the like.

Yeah I agree. Its necessary really. A lot of the rimless systems are quite new and unfortunately I think most will end up loosing fish eventually to jumping if they have not already. I think its just a matter of time and thats kind of sad really.

I am mad at myself because I have creatures in my care that I KNOW jump and I carelessly kept them in an improper environment.

It just still really hurts. I am having a very hard time looking at the tank still. I have just kind of stayed away tonight and asked my fiance to feed the other fish for me. I think this one is going to take a while. :(

Justin, not sure how I missed this thread but I feel bad for you. I know just how much Spider meant to you, my boys and I loved the pictures you posted of him. I know this is very tough, but you will find plenty of support from us here on RC. I do hope you don't give up on the hobby, your willingness to provide help to anyone, and your clear love of your animals is a testament to your character.

Thanks, that means a lot to hear. Everyone here is so supportive and I would miss this place too much if I got out of the hobby. I just never thought it would be so hard to loose a fish. I have lost my fair share of fish in the past, some were harder than others but none compared to this. I think because I had more of a connection with him than any other fish I have ever owned but also because I feel so responsible.

I'm really sorry to hear this :(. Hang in there. I know it really hurts to lose a fish that meant a lot to you.

Losing a cherished pet is hard no matter what.

Take what solace you can from the knowledge that he wouldn't have lived at all if it weren't for you rescuing him (over the objections of your LFS) and nursing him back to health. You took him out of a certainly fatal situation and gave him years of a healthy life, which ain't nothing, and it's more than most would have done.

Justin,

Sorry for your loss, I can't imagine. I have had the same 5 fish for quite a while now, I don't know what I'd do if I lost any of them.

One thing for sure, I'm building a canopy as soon as I get home tonight!

Wow, thanks everyone...The support from RC is so nice :)

I still have not even looked at the tank yet. I had my fiance feed them all again this morning and I have just stayed away.

I guess I will have to face that tank sooner or later...she isn't going to do the next water change ;)

My condolences. I definitely know how you feel!

Thanks.

I finally went near the tank this evening and needless to say, it was very weird not to see him there. He was quite large and impossible to miss as he would greet anyone who entered the room. Usually spitting at you if you got close enough :)

I went to see my brothers Golden Puffer, well its actually still in its spotted phase with a yellow belly and may not end up golden at all but Im really not ready for another puffer right now I don't think. Although if my brothers Guinea Fowl does not change all the way to golden and stays inbetween like he is now, I would LOVE to have that fish! Hes so cool looking.

Thanks again to everyone here for the support, it makes it a little easier I guess.

Justin, I know it's not easy. I am attached to all my fish, but care for my puffers more than any of the others. They really have individual and special personalities.

Like most folks have said, give it some time. That "special" puffer will probably come along just when you are finally ready for another one. Hang in there, and let us know how it's going.

Yeah, keep coming back for support and soon enough it will get easier to look at the tank. BTW- the golden puffer sounds SWEET--but you know I'm a sucker for 'em.

Yeah hes really cool looking right now because he is black and yellow with white spots all over! I don't think hes going to change all the way to golden either as I said earlier.

I have a little baby Valentini Puffer that used to follow Spider all over the tank. I mean he would never be more than a few inches away. And Im not exaggerating. I don't know if its just my imagination but he seems really, really depressed today. I keep telling myself he could not be "missing" Spider but he's just acting so different and will not get up off the rocks.

Just in case, you might want to test water, maybe do a partial water change. While it's quite possible the valentini is depressed, there might be something else going on, worth a check.

Yeah I tested right away but nothing came up. All I can think if is that the carbon in my ozone return needed to be changed out and maybe was not catching all the "stray" ozone from the water. He is pretty much the smallest in the tank so he may have felt it. I changed that yesterday and today hes normal again. May have been the issue.

I'd be really slow to blame ozone, it reacts pretty quick with the substances in water, even without carbon in your return flow it takes a LOT of ozone to ever get into the display in quantities that matter.

Unless you're pumping out like 400mg or something crazy.

Justin,

Sorry for your lose. I lost a diamond goby that I had for 2 years this past winter. The first tank was open top for the 2 years with no issues. I set-up a new tank and after transferring the livestock I had a 2 week time without a canopy on the new tank while a custom canopy was being built. During the time I was waiting for the new canopy the goby jumped during the night.

On a happier note, my porcupine puffer spits at me as well.

Keep your head up, it'll get better!

Yeah I never really thought it was the ozone but just throwing that out there. My reactor is actually big enough that by the time the water exits it, I doubt much ozone remains and the carbon chamber removes whatever is still there.

And no, I would not be pumping 400mg/hr into my 130G tank! Its a 200mg/hr unit but I run it around 25 mg/hr since I took it off the controller a few months ago (my probe broke) to be safe.

Thanks. Its getting better...I still can't look at the tank without getting a little upset because its just so weird not to see him still.

I have decided I will be taking my brother golden most likely. I just need to work out paying for it since I know he paid around $500 for that guy. He wants to just give it to me free but theres no way  I couldn't accept him for nothing.

I will try to get some pics of him next week if I go to my brother place.
