Safe guard

So what do you do as a safe guard for your tank?

Water overflowing: I have experienced and heard about many tank over flowed and wet the floor. What should you do to avoid tank overflow?

I always Install an extra drain right below the overflow box just incase the water level rised all of a suddent. I also only use a return pump rated lower than the overflow box. And last but not least, after I installed all the plumbing I always test it by turning off power to simmulate a power outage making sure my sump can handle the water drain from the main tank.

Skimmer cup drain to a bottle outside your sump can also create a problem if it is not set up correctly. Your skimmer can go crazy once day and drain your tank and skimmage onto the floor. Keep everything inside the sump.

Heater cooking a tank: Always use a temp controller when it comes to heater or chiller. The little dial on the heater is not accurate and tend to get faulty and turn the heater on continuosly.

GFI switch, this is a safe way to connect electrical devices but it can also kill your whole tank if not careful. Imagine you went to work and the GFI switch off for some reason turning of the power to your whole tank for hours. I never use GFI. I only make sure everything is grounded correctly.

Tank over heat: All I can say is, AC, fans and chiller. Invest in one or more of these devices.

I am sure there are more but I can't remember them at this moment. What are yours, please list them so we can get some ideas.

Another thing that I just though off is power outage. What to do?

Currently I have a coule of battery power airpumps, a computer battery backup unit to run my DC powerheads (Tunze), and I also have a generator on stabdby just incase I need it. Most cases all you really need is some batteries power airpump to keep the tank going for a couple of hours.

Another thing you can also do is use your car battery, connect it to a power inverter and voila you have an expensive generator to run those DC pumps. :D

I have one of those inverters. Can connect it up to car/truck and off we go.

Not so many years ago we were without power for 4 days. Right it SR! Big January storm. Of course the house will get cold and then you'll need more that just battery air pumps. I didn't have any aquariums then so we just sat in the dark and cold.

Now I'd use the inverter for short time heat and water movement. If it looked like the outage was going to be a while, off to HD for a generator!

On the subject of flood, check out Harbor Freight. Search for 'leak detector'. They have a $6 item that will sound off if there is a leak.
