sailfin blennie not eating that i know of.

I got 2 Ocellaris clowns and a sailfin blennie over the past weekend at the LFS. all 3 are in the QT right now for the next few weeks. the clowns are loving life away from the crowed LFS, but the blennie just hides. I havent seen him eat anything.

the QT is a bare glass bottom. I have 3 pvc pieces for hiding/playing. he seemed to hide under the heater which bothered me also being that he eats algae, and wasnt going haveing the mysis i was feeling, or pellets that i tried, I added a algae covered shell from the DT to the QT (it has 3 holes that he very much enjoys hiding in, to the point that i havent seem more than just his head poke out since he learned it was in there.

So I know there is no sand bed for him to cruise around, am i hurtting him by having no sand?
I got some food flavoring stuff that I dont really know if it is a gimmic or not but the guy from the LFS (not where i usually go, dont buy much from this one usually the dog/cat food, but figured i would ask)

doesnt seem like that made much of a difference.

anyway what would you suggest or do you think he is fine and will pretty much take care of himself?

Try some nori or other seaweed and some brine or Mysis. Mine is a pig! never had a problem with him eating.

I would imagine it feels a lot more secure now it has the shell to shelter in (certainly mine never ventures far from his shell) so hopefully will feed soon.

I had mine for a whole 2 years before he started eating prepared foods. Up until that point he would only scrape algae off the rocks and back glass. You're is probably the same way - he'll only graze on naturally growing algae and eat nothing else. QT's obviously don't have any. I would get him to the DT as soon as possible.

most only eat algae. if you have none you could try green seaweed from the pet store.

I have a rock that put in there with a hiding hole and it has hair algae on it. from what i can tell he has not eaten any of the algae. I catch him swimming some times if he doesnt see me standing at the door way. kinda weird. seems to be doing ok tho and the pellets seem to dissappear slowly

What is your QT routine? I have one that eats anything you put in and I think in tandem with a kole tang they do a bang up job on algae. My second one, which I got for a separate tank with algae problems, didn't eat at all through my QT and very slowly started eating in the display but he pretty much eats pellets and frozen mysis now. He doesn't touch algae though.

My QT is TTM and I dose prazi concurrently. Probly not the best way but it gets my fish into the display in 12 days and eliminates ich, flukes, and internal parasites. I started doing it that way because I'm admittedly an impatient person. Good luck

What do you mean by TTM? I keep new fish in the qt for a month. Usually just a couole pvc peices but with the blennie I added a shell that has 3 hiding holes and some green hair algae. No chems only sun light and a 5 gallon wc using dt water once a week

ttm = tank transfer method i think. has he been eating? try putting in stuff with different kinds of algae growing on it. they may not eat certain kinds. most seem to prefer film algae and similar algae. sunlight is good for growing algae. if you can get the QT to grow film algae on the sides, that will be good. also, if you're cleaning algae from the main tank, put that algae in the QT. careful not to contaminate the DT with even a drop of water from QT. do not use things in the DT that have been used in the QT. such as nets. blenny is likely scared of the other fish and causing him to be stressed and not come out to feed. do not skip QT on any fish. not worth killing your DT. blennies can carry disease. forget about that ich resistant garbage people spew. when feeding, leave and come back to see if he's eating when you're away. some fish are shy of humans at first and will not feed in front of them. the best way to see if he's eating is, see if his stomach gets bigger. not eating can be a sign of weakness, stress, fear, or disease. so i would not just toss him into the DT.
