Sailfin tang - white swollen mouth

My husband is picking up a vitamin and antibiotic at the LFS now. With the tomini showing the same signs, I'm worried. Google brings back nothing with info. Brings back others that have had the issue, but no one knows why besides possible injury.

LFS said the same thing, sounds like an injury. Stop prazi for now (already did last night) run antibiotics and get vitamins in their food. Once signs are gone, then I can formalin dip and start prazi again. Thankfully they're both still eating great!

you might be dealing with bacterial or fungal infection. It might not be a bad idea to do a 60-90 min acriflavine bath followed with a min 10 day antibiotic cocktail of metroplex, kanaplex and furan2.
Also in my opinion there is no point in doing a fw dip or formalin dip right after a prazipro treatment or within a few days after it since prazi will usually knock out all or most of the flukes out. Do two rounds of prazi 5-7 days a part and then observe and see how they do. you can do a fw dip a week after the second treatment to make sure you got all the flukes, if not can try formalin.
usually 24 hours in prazi is enough to get the job done so if you see the fish acting weird, not eating or not taking it well you can run carbon after 24 hours or do a water change.

The thing is, how do I know if I got all of the flukes? How do I know if another round or formalin is needed? I guess I was under the impression formalin helped with more than just flukes? I do it on all of my new fish for safe measures.

Our LFS only had one antibiotic. I'll know shortly which one it is when he gets home.

The best way to confirm you still have flukes is by doing a fw dip usually 5-7 days after the 2nd prazi treatment.
Formalin is usually great at knocking out flukes (and brook) most of the time but it is very harsh and carcinogenic. There has been some theories if i'm not mistaking that suggest that fish that were exposed to it dont seem to live very long in captivity. I personally use it as well; usually when I just receive the fish I do a bath and only reuse when everything else fails. but I have had instances of flukes where neither prazi or formalin was able to completely eradicate and the only thing that worked for me was hypo.
The reason for the antibiotic cocktail is that there is no way to know exactly what type of bacterial/fungal infection you are dealing with so when using the trio together you have a better chances of treating most infections.

Got it. Thank you so much for the thorough response on here! I only add fish max 1 time a year, so even though I have a good QT regimen, in definitely not an expert on what I'm looking for.

Truth is, I don't even know that we have flukes. Ill get the antibiotics going today along with the selcon to see if they improve, then pick things back up again with prazi treatments.

Thanks again!

There hasn't been any aggression at all, I'm really surprised by it. Expected it to be honest.

I've separated the tangs with the mouth issues into 2 separate tanks

Only about 12 hours with antibiotics and both of their mouths are looking normal again!! That was quick... quicker than I anticipated!
