I have a 55 gallon QT that has been sitting empty but running for around 4 months. Three weeks ago I put some shrimp in to cycle and a few days ago ammonia was back to zero.
I check the salinity and it was 1.0191. I just went ahead and mixed salt water at a higher salinity and changed around 15 gallons (I needed to do water change anyway) and got it up to 1.0226 (I have a Misco digital meter).
My question, does this rapid change affect the bacteria? I plan on picking up a fish tonight. My guess is I am ok, but I figured I would ask.
