Salinity level in my saltwater tank

Hello Everyone,
A fish store told me that I want the salinity level in my fish tank that only has fish, rocks, hermit crabs, and will soon have 3 turbo snails to be around 1.021 on my portable refractometer. I just wanted to make sure, is this correct?

Only if you want the snails and hermits to die. The ocean doesn't have different salinity levels for different critters.

I would shoot for a SG of 1.025 in any SW tank (natural surface average 35ppt). Unfortunately many LFS keep animals at low SG, like 1.021 or less. It's cheaper and a little easier on the fish in the short run--but it makes acclimating to your tank a chore (several days would be best).

Several days??? From an SG of 1.021 to 1.025? I do that in under 30 minutes.

Plenty of fish only tanks are kept around 1.02, don't think there would be an issue.

:fish1: Hi, 1.02?, I think you are missing a number, why not keep them around 1.026, after all that is the SG of most NSW. I collect all my water from the Atlantic Ocean, and on most days the SG is 1.026, also most of the fish, corals, and everything else we put in our system comes from the oceans around the world with the same specific gravity. :fish1:

Low salinity was also thought to keep fish from getting ick as easily since ick can't reproduce in low SG. Not sure if that still holds true? Also hermits and snails can come from tide pool areas and SG can change drastically from heat and evaporation in these areas.
