Refractometers you need to Prime and essentially have it setup before you can begin testing water. I believe they come with priming solution but the should be primed on a regular basis.

BRS sells a refractometer for $40 bucks comes with calibration solution alls you do is drip it on the slide and adjust the screw till its at the correct SG it's very simple and I have found that it holds calibration very well

Calibration solution is also good to have, although calibrating with RODI or distilled water is ok too, as stated before just be consistent.
