Salinity meter vs. refractometer

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I've been using a RHS-10ATC refractometer calibrated to 0 with ro/di and thinking I was being pretty darn close with my salinity levels. Not! Calibrating at 0 is like only having one pH solution and trying to go with just that. I got my meter this week and it comes with a 53mv calibration solution. Hooked it up and checked and I wasn't at 1.026 but 1.028. When I got my salinity back down to 53 mv (1.026) the refractometer was showing 1.024 so I calibrated it to that. If anyone would like to calibrate their refractometers with my salinity meter LMK and I can bring it to the next meeting just bring a decent sized sample with you to stick the meter into as well as squirt on your refractometer. I could calibrate your hydrometers too if you wanted.

Roy, next time you come buy ,bring it with you if you remember. I would like to test it out !

No problem. I was thinking instead of people bringing water, just bring thier refractometers and I'll bring about 1/2 gallon of water I checked with the salinity meter. Then they could just calibrate the refractometers off of that. Less water running around and I don't have to do so much testing.

^^^ that's a good idea... I'll be bringing mine as I've always wanted to do a better calibration but never got around to making a homemade standard.

where did you get the meter? What do the run in cost?

I got it through thereefstop.com it's a pinpoint brand and it was about 120.
