Man unless it's free I would advise you to not buy that and get a simple but quality refractometer. For $35-45 you can get one that needs less maintenance and is super easy to use. Just rinse with rodi when done.
Also does TDS. Honestly I found one someone is willing to part with for not much more than a high end refractometer so I was like I don't have much to loose.
Saltwater is at 53 mS/cm, and you're probably right about the device not necessarily reading high enough levels, but you could check the specs. I used a salinity meter and liked it, but a refractometer is fine, too.
