salinity of 1.028. problem?

I have been using one of those scrappy plastic things to measure my salinity for 6 months now. I thought I have been mixing my water to 1.024-.025. Just checked with a Refractometer that I just picked up and it's at 1.028. Those plastic ones with an arm are a complete waste of money! Glad I picked this joker up.

I got in on my way to work tonight. I tested it with deep park water....haha. Dunno how close that is to 1.000. Should be on it. I'll check it with RO when I get home.

You really need to check it with calibration fluid that is in the range of 1.025. You could be off by trying to calibrate it to ro/di water.

I work in a calibration lab and It's always best to calibrate equipment as close to what you actauly expect to use it at if at all possible. If you can find a calibrated salinity solution around 1.025 that would be ideal. Same for other measures. I have a pH probe that I callibrate at 9.15pH becasue that's the closest pH to the 8 range I can produce. Any error from calibrating at a value far off of actualy measured values just multiplys the farther away you get.

I should use a precision scale and beaker to chek my salinity jsut to see how close it is...Might have to do that when I get home
