I am thinking about getting something to measure salinity. Something better than lab-style hydrometer. I am leaning toward high-tech gagettery
Which do you think will be better this one or that one ?
Or should I forget about electronic equipment and get plain simple refractometer?
This is the one I would get as it dose all of these readings.-"temperature (F), salinity (ppt) and specific gravity (e.g., 1.024) displayed in scales commonly used by aquarists without the need for conversions."
That looks like what I may get myself good price to.
Yes, review sucked. However besides Reef-OCD disorder I have marketting-paranoya disorder, so I am reluctant to trust any reviews that store "gives".
What would be great is if someone in here (RC) had one, and talked about their experiences.
I've been using the PinPoint and it seems to work well. The meters from the lab supply companies are very pricey. They are high quality and will measure salinity over a fairly wide range, but they are overkill for our tanks IMO, although tempting.
Junk the hydrometer ASAP. I just bought a refractometer today... The hydrometer said the water was right on 1.025. The refractometer said 1.030. I thought my refractometer was out of whack, but nope...the hydrometer was just that bad.
It seems to me that unless you had a large system with one sump hooked up to several tanks, there is no need to check salinity on anything but a weekly basis. It's not likely to vary as much as PH or temperature. I am very happy with a refractometer. Just my opinion.
I use my refractometer, but don't exactly like using it. I have a hard time distinguishing the blue from the white to figure out exactly where the salinity level is. Maybe im blue colorblind...
I hate guesswork, that is is the blue line over this or that scale line? The electronic stuff costs twice as much as refractometer however no more hurting eyes. Thanks bertoni!
charm: hm... $43 for refractometer or $1,500 for a gadget?...hm... tough one
