salmon clowns

I was looking through and old marine aquarium book and found some Salmon Clowns ( Amphiprion perideraion ) I guess aka Pink Skunk Clownfish.

What I would like to know is if anybody has any experience with them?

Does anybody know where I can get them and about what I should pay?

I am interested in them cause I haven't seen anybody with them and they stay small according to the book, which is perfect for the new 20L.

They are great for nano tanks, very cool fish. I see them at my LFS from time to time for just slightly more than Ocellaris.

I seem to remember these guys being among the most peaceful clownfish.
 
Not sure if you can call the pink skunk the most peaceful clownfish, if they are similiar to orange skunks.

But Orange Skunk is one of the most evil clownfish around, I had one that is so sneaky that took out a blue stripe clownfish that is 5X larger in size. It just hide in holes and come out and take a bite attack and hide back, so when the blue stripe tries to fight, it's already gone.
 
they are a very nice fish. i had two and they are also captive breed.very resonable price,i paid 13.99 ea. for mine.
 
Are we talking about normal pink skunk clownfish or the more rare Tonga "orange colour" pink skunk clownfish (like in the book)
 
Gorgeous clowns, and mine were some of the most peaceful around.

They would actually let me stoke them too!
 
Nice clowns. I wouldn't say that they stay small though. They get much larger than ocellaris or percs.

However for t.r. specimens, their growth rate is SOOOO much slower than ocellaris or percs. The ones I had (pink & orange) doesn't grow more than an inch after I had them for 3 years. The ocellaris I had in the next compartment has already grown to become a breeding pair.
 
Wow thank you for the replies.

It sounds like these guys are perfect for what I want to do with them. I would like to have a pair and I will put them in my new nano once I get it done and cycled, :). Then once I get the in wall 75 done and stable after a few months they will get a new home in there.

Is there any special way to tell if they are tank bread?
I would like them to be tank bread as that way I am doing a small part in conservation.

I didn't know that there was a rare tonga species. The book doesn't go into that much detail.

Does any one know if they are prone to any disease?

This was my experience too! Pretty cheap too!
 
they are usually not that aggressive, ORA breeds them if you have a LFS that orders from ORA they can order you some, they have pink skunks and orange skunks, the pink are not expensive, but I am not really sure how much the orange are, but I don't think they are that much. But I would agree that they grow really slowly, I can't say I have ever seen one that is much bigger than the size when they were

I have asked the question at one of them and they wouldn't tell me who their supplier is. They said that they were not at liberty to say. What gives? I cant see why this would be top secret info.

If your LFS have "true picasso" clownfish for sale, that's one indication that they are getting from ORA. :)

Honestly, pink skunks and orange skunks are not that 'rare' and are pretty available in the hobby. The thing is, they usually do not sell even half the volume of ocellaris or percula, so LFS just do not stock them often. Price-wise , if t.r. should be very similar in price within $5-10 range.

(that's speaking about the pink perideraion (pink skunk with head band), not that orange variatiant shown in the book picture .above) Normal orange skunk does not have head band.
 
If your LFS orders from ORA they would probably tell you. It looks good for them on a conservation basis plus it is sort of branding. I would very much doubt that they do if they won't tell you. Go to ORA's site www.orafarm.com and they will tell you what stores around you carry their animals. You shouldn't have to pay more than $20 for them.
 
These clowns are easy to sex as the males always have an orange outline on their caudal fins. Big females can be aggresive.
