Salt Mix Analysis Report

Red Sea Blue Bucket for me. ALWAYS consistent and perfect for me (ULNS System...Zeovit). I like to run 7 on Alk, so this mix is perfect for me.

People use IO there is nothing wrong with it. Lot's of nice TOTM using it, probably more than any other. I do nothing to it but bring to temp. In fact my water change tank has been never cleaned for over 4 years now, crap all over it. if there is any problems with manufactures mess up you will know right away because so many people use it. That in itself is priceless in my book. I always use salt that was made at least 6 months before using it. I will know from the boards if its not right. All manufactures mess up at some point.

I have two biggest fears. First is they stop making metal halides specifically Radiums. The next is they change the formula for IO. I would be leery of that last TOTM anybody with money can have a nice tank. You have to look at the people that have grown them from frags. Not trying to start something, just wanted to say my say do what u want I don't care I could be wrong. I've seen high end salt just about impossible to keep Acros.

Anyone whomever had the opportunity to see your DT will immediately sense that you have a natural talent for this hobby .. .. ..

That being said .. .. Some of us need all the help we can get .. .. .. Congrats on being consistently successful at keeping large colonies of SPS and making it look like child's play .. .. .. Please share with us your current parameters so we may use it as a resource to refer to.

How often do you perform water changes and at what percentage of total volume do you change?

Thank you. I'm passionate about salt, the longer I'm in this the more I see it is very important to all be on the same page. I'm trying to help people this is the only reason I even post. If someone asks me why he is having trouble keeping sps the first two questions I ask is lights (photo period) and salt. If he says another brand of salt at that point I really can't help him it could be his salt.

If you are into zoas, chalices and acans I say use the salt you want. They grow too slow for me, maybe its the IO. I do know a lot of people growing them with IO so probably not that.

You can find how I run things here http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2009-01/totm/index.php

I really have not changed anything other than I'm no longer running Kalk or carbon and my phosphate is .01

Another thing to consider is when selecting salts, when do I want to use it.

Some salts cannot sit for more then a couple of hours of mixing it.

Red Sea Pro is one of them, that must be use right away after mixing, or you will have problems.
When you change salts, you really need to read up on it on how to use it properly and how to mix it.
Not all salts are same and the way you mix it is different from brand x.

Red sea coral pro used right away after mixing??? I've used it after a month and haven't had any issues.

You may want to read the Red Sea Instructions.
Maybe your lucky but its not the way they want you to do it.

Good thread to read up.

To Quote from the results of that thread, for those that do not want to read the whole thing. Sums it up petty good.

Not to single you out of course but I don't understand why people keep ignoring Red Seas very clear instructions not to store the salt or mix it for long periods of time. This is not the salt for you if you plan to mix for long periods of time, heat the salt while mixing or store it for later use. It is made to be mixed with room temperature water, with no heat during mixing and then used immediately.

I have been testing with Brightwell Neomarine and have found that the longer it sits mixing the darker gray my white bucket gets. Funny how reactions happen. If I only mix it for twelve to 24 hours in the bucket and put it in my small tank nothing like this occurs inside the tank or the bucket.

Not sure what salt you use Pedro and I am not trying to speak for you or anyone else. Only my own experience. I have no idea if it is good or bad for the junk to precipitate. No idea what it actually is.

It is likely just calcium carbonate that some salts precipitate, perhaps because they initially ix to a petty high pH, as well as higher than NSW alk and to a lesser extent, calcium.

In any case, there is rarely any harm in letting the water sit for weeks before use. Calcium and alkalinity won't go below NSW levels.

This! This! This!

This video from BRS is exactly why I will only use ESV salt. It is exactly the same advice John (from FAOIS) gave. Yes - it is more expensive than IO or Red Sea - but pay attention to the comments regarding EDTA and other binding/chelating agents. Very important! While it's a neat marketing gimmick to say we've evaporated red sea salt so it must be good - think about it. what's in there? pollutants? organics?

I don't care if it has pollutants or chellatting contents Lol, red sea coral pro works great for me as well as other systems that I've seen.

There are NO metal chelators in normal IO. :)
