I thought you would be interested in some numbers someone was testing on salts.

Calcium Alk Mag

Instant Ocean 350 12 1070
Coralife 560 9 1380
Oceanic 580 8.5 1650
Aquatic Gardens (Petco) 430 8 1240
Red Sea 400 8 1300
Seachem Reef Salt 540 10 1450
Kent 540 11 1200
Tropic Marin 375 10 1230
Tropic Marine Pro Reef 450 8.5 1380
Reef Crystals (used to be) 420 12 1260
We'll wait to see what shakes out of the RC situation.

Here is the link http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1282073

io 40 dollars shipped for 160g, rc 41 shipped for 160g, oceanic 50 dollars shipped for 200 g , seachem reef salt 50 dollars shipped for 160 g, red sea pro for about 160 55 shipped, coral life 150 g 45 shipped

I used to buy Tropic Marin for 90 dollars for 300 gallons. I now stick with Reef Crystals. Cheap and on sale quite often. The only one that really sucks is Oceanic.

Always caused algae blooms for me. Several of us noticed it and a HUGE thread was on here about it. I switched to Tropic Marin for about 6 months with no issues. I figured I'd use my bucket up and used some and the same junk came back. I went back to Tropic Marin. However, I can only get that salt in Orlando, so now I tried Reef Crystals. So far, no issues at all.

Why does it say "used to be?"

Reef Crystals (used to be) 420 12 1260

Is it called something different now or are the numbers different?

the new one isn't the same. I have heard from a friend that the batches he recently got weren't the same parameters anymore

I've been using Tropic Marin only since I got the bad batch of I.O. a few years back.
Darn stuff killed allmost all of my corals

But they did offer to replace the bucket of salt..........

that's very nice of them:rolleyes:

on a second note both george and i use oceanic and love the results. no algea problems as stated by jay but every tank is different. we use it due to the parameters and according to the numbers it looks like the oceanic is the better choice but just like vho vs t5 and 10k vs 20k i guess my motto always comes into the picture. (do what works best for you). btw oceanic has almost no salt creap and mixes within mintues if not seconds. jmo
