After 2 years, I have been unable to to point to the Sharpie ink as the cause of any issues in my tanks, and I have had plenty of issues.
It's good to consider the ramifications of what comes into contact with tank water, but the small amount of ink, over the course of hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water is less concern that putting your hands in the tank with out washing them.
