Salt mixing question

I've been buying my salt for the last couple years but need to make some up for a special project.

Is it 1/2 cup per gallon of water or a full cup per gallon of water?

Lost the direction, only have the salt in sealed bags. Put in 2.5 cups for a 5g container 5 hours ago but salinity is stil at 1.012 with refractometer.

If you have a refractometer just add a little more, stir it up, retest, and repeat till you get the reading you want.

For me, 5 gallons of RO/DI water needs about 2 1/4 cups of salt to get to 1.024, although the instructions (at least with Instant Ocean, which is what I use) say 1/2 cup for each gallon.
