What type of salt are you using?

haha...did you even read the post....? its the first line..
hopefully someone can shed some light on this, it doesn't seem right but the 2 clowns in my ttm bucket can care less

I have only used a total of 2 boxes of HW Marine Mix.

First box mixed wonderfully...it was loose grain. My second box was a brick and I had to chisel it a bit and remix it. That second box mixed terribly...it would take about 3x the amount of time to mix up 15 gallons using the same powerhead and I would have to hand mix a portion of it.

That could be your issue as well.

interesting, this box was pretty loose grain when it was first opened then after some time it got a little hard, not to the point where i have to chizzle it but its definitely clumpy now.

Salt question

I have used hw for over a year now. I never used to get the buildup, but for whatever reason it's been worse recently. Like you said, it's not hard and if I take my finger, it rubs right off. I think maybe it's a little precipitation? I will take a photo of my mixing container when I get home before it gets cleaned. I havnt noticed any adverse effects from it though.

Edit: it's always been loose grain. I've never gotten a shipment in that is brick like. I use a bucket to store the Salt with an airtight screw on lid from Home Depot.

I have had this happen to me before using different brands and types. I have always assumed it was just minerals that weren't quite so water soluble.

unless the salt is pure synthetic, most of them use anti-binding agents to keep the salt from clumping. This plus other forms of mineral impurities in natural salt sources will result in this type of residue.

From my experience, IO is the worst offender. They use some serious anti-clumping agents that over time leaves a nasty dark paste in the mixing container and all the associated equipment.

I have since switched to completely synthetic salts.

the salt clumping could be because the salt is binding from moisture. i used to be io in the 4 plastic bags. it was a little cheaper, but i would always have salt left in bottom of the mixing bucket. i now switched to the buck witch is completely resealable and havent had that issue.

HW is purely synthetic without the binding agents. It's advertised as so saying it won't leave the residue. One of the reasons I tried this Salt.

guess they lied about the residue. go figure :) thats why i just use cheap io. feel those more expensive salts are all talk. i changed salts several times never noticed a difference in my tanks, so why not go with the cheapest

To be fair I didn't have this problem in ththe beginning. It's only been the last few months.

just mixed up a new batch of about 30 gallons..no clumping this time just super cloudy, so cloudy you can't see the heater in the bottom of a 5g bucket.

well i dumped that batch and made another batch and it was fine at first then got cloudy.....im over hw marine reefer salt. any recomendations?

I had similar problems with different brands of salt, tried a few different ones and found that red sea coral pro salt is my favorite. Mixes well, coral and fish all happy. 10% water change is only 5 gallons a week for me though.
