Salt water changes by using the Great South Bay

My brother has started a new fish only salt water tank. He has been taking salt water from the Great South Bay.

What "purifications" or anything is needed for water changes using this water.

I remember Joe saying that Atlantis also uses Bay water. What are the procedures for using it in a tank.

Thanks much,

i collect water from about 200yards from moriches inlet (into the ocean) all the time to use in my tank.

never had a problem with it. i simply drain my 10 gallon sump, rinse it out with fresh water. dump the NSW in, put the heater in my sump, once it warms up, start the pump again. its that simple.

when i first started doing this, i put it in a tank by itself and ran my skimmer on it. the next morning there was a very small amount of water with a slightly yellow tinge to it. nothing compared to the sruff i pull out of my tank. and i can usually pull a 1/4 cup of dark stuff from my tank in a day or two.

also, since using NSW, i really notice the blues, greens and especially purples in my corals really pop after a water change.

JustJoe,

I was hoping you would point me to what you are doing. Awesome thread and great articles. Very cool that Atlantis is really just "your puppy". I had a great time when we had our Atlantis outing. Thank you for contributing so much to this forum and making Atlantis so much fun.

Teen,

Thank you for your feedback.

Much appreciated to everyone and all of the great contributors that I was pointed to for the articles.

Very cool.
