Salt water mixing

I'm brand new to aquariums, read numerous books and researched a ton online. I'm having a hard time finding reliable and consistent information for making my own saltwater.

I have instant ocean mix.

How long can I keep the saltwater after I mix it?

Is it better to use distilled water or tap water with the solution in it?

Thank you so much

Welcome to Reef Central!

RO/DI is preferable, though distilled may be okay. Tap water has the potential for more issues, depending on the source. Using Instant Ocean (which I also use) can be kept indefinitely if you have a lid on it to keep contaminates out. It doesn't even need to be continually mixed or heated... just be sure to aerate and heat it prior to use.

I highly recommend reading the "SETTING UP" sticky at the top of this forum (link). There is a link there regarding saltwater specifically to address these questions, as well as a TON of useful articles, forum posts, etc to help you with other questions you may have.

You're welcome! I keep referring back to it time and again. Most of my questions are answered somewhere in there... :)

Your going to want to use RO or RODI water. If you have a Local Fish Store (LFS) you can talk to them. They usually sell the water for super cheap.

If you must use tap water go ahead and make sure that you use PRIME or conditioner to remove the chlorine and other chemicals in the water (which is normal for us, not the fish).

You cna pre-mix large amounts of saltwater and store it in large brute containers for several weeks. Depending on your tank size you could move through 30 gallons of premixed water before the end of the month. Just make sure you have something in the container to keep mixing the water (i use a cheap powerhead and a heater to keep it warm).

Dont mix saltwater and then add it directly to the tank, that can be harmful for the fish. It should sit for a few hours at least before adding it to the tank.

Different brands of salt have different procedures. Some have more trace elements, and need to be used between 20 minutes - 4 hours of mixing to keep everything dissolved in the water, while others can sit around. Iirc IO is ok to store if you want to.

Always add the salt to the water, never water to salt.
Always replace evaporated tank water with unsalted water.

Depending on the size of your tank it can be muuuch cheaper to buy a rodi filter for your water. Tap water can have chlorine and metals that water conditioners handle, and also nutrients like phosphate or elements like alkalinity or calcium that will throw off the balance of your salt mix. Water conditioners don't touch those. The salt is like evaporated ocean water, so it is developed to have pure h2o added back to it and arrive at the proper balance. If your tap water has alk and Ca to begin with, and your salt adds it too, you can wind up with too much.

If you can't swing a filter just yet, "distilled" water is a pure substitute, not "drinking" or "spring" bottled water. You can get distilled from Walmart for like $1 a gallon. I wouldn't buy water from a fish store. There's a lot of horror stories about them being lazy changing filters and stuff, but it's impossible to test the water for purity once the salt is added, so you just have to trust them.

Welcome and good luck!

the water will eventually start to evaporate and the salinity will increase, just make sure you check the salinity before you put it into the tank.
