How is everyone doing on salt? I will be needing a few bags:D and was wondering does anyone want to look into getting some bulk? Also with that what does everyone use I have used IO due to that is what I always used do to cost. Any input?
 
One note on this is that I would give the local LFS stores first crack on the order, What ever type we would decide to get.
 
EBay has it for $40 with membership card (200 gallons). I think they were able to get it for $35 a box in bulk, but that was a while back. I'm gonna need some for the move. If you can get a lower cost than that on IO, let me know and I'll take several (3-5)200 gallon boxes.
 
did you buy a 1000 gal. finally gary? we both know putting EVERYTHING in one big time makes more sense :) i think you should go for it........
 
I couln't imagine getting cheaper than ebay has done us (the $35 once and standing $40 no tax) I always get my salt there and IO is a great salt used by many, many reefers. Been around forever so it has to be good you would think. Especially for the money....
I use a lot of salt around here.
 
That is why I said we prob would use local as it normally works out better but I don't want to assume that they will always do that for us I hope they will as I will need a lot of boxes of it.
 
yep, I am in...you know that I am gonna need some salt Wayne! Thanks for putting this up, I was hoping someone would so I could get in on a deal!
 
I didn't mean it that way if it seemed I was sugesting you were undercutting the Local LFS ;) I feel lucky we have 2 such wonderful ones who support us in such great ways! I know the East Tn folks get pallets shipped in sometimes and the best they can get on pricing is about the same. I bet it will take you a pallet yourself! Either way you go I could always use a few boxes! I thought I put I would take at least 2 last night but didn't.
 
Ive bought some red sea pro salt mix the last time & have been really impressed with it. I could notice a diff in my corals after a week & a half. I had been using the instant ocean I got from the last bulk order up untill I tried the red sea.
 
i picked up a small bucket of the red sea coral pro from AC and it doesn't mix too good for me. Seems there is always some salt crystals left at the bottom of the tank that wont dissolve. eyebeam, have you come up with a mix? It doesnt say like most salts, 1/2 cup per gallon, just says like a lbs or whatever to 5 gallons.

I have the instant ocean also...my only problem is my PH tends to try and drop and I have to buffer all the time, I am not sure if this is a salt issue, but I would not mind trying another kind if possible, but will still be in if happens to be IO again.
 
I think most guys PH drops in a reef from natural reasons so its not the salt I would bet. Could be wronge though but my PH stays right at 8. 24/7 with IO but I do run a fuge lighted at night to help keep it up. I hardley ever have to dose PH mi in the 270 but had to every night in the 80... Sorry for the hijack :)
 
I noticed that when I mixed up mine. I used 2 1/4 a cups for 5 gallons of water & luckily came out at a ph of 8.3. I did aerate the heck out of it with 2 powerheads overnite so dissolving wasnt an issue 4 me. I did notice the salt was a little more dense that IO but i liked the fact it had an air tight bucket to keep the salt dry. Thats my only prob with the IO 200 lb boxes that we get. If you dont ust all the salt you got to store it & keep it air tight. What is the chances of getting reef crystals this time around if emerald bay does this order for us again. Id be in for 3 boxes.
 
I just ordered a bucket of reef crystals 3 days ago. I knew a salt order would come up after I ordered.

I thought we were talking about the box with the individual 50 gallon bags...not the buckets. I definately don't want the buckets. I'll split an order of RC through Doc fosters eyebedam if they are going to order the buckets.
 
when my bucket comes in, I plan on filling ziplock bags with 5 gallons worth (probably like 2 1/2 cups of salt) and store them in a large rubbermaid.
