Saltwater bacteria

Will rinsing a cartridge/ floss/ sponge in freshwater kill the bacteria in it?

probly...since freshwater, meaning tap water, contains chlorine and flouride and all kinds of other anti bacteria thingies in it. I would think that even rinsing it in ro would rinse away a number of the bacteria's in it.

It will kill off alot but not all. Best option to me is if you have more than one filter in the tank. You could alternate and rinse one at a time.

I think it would kill it all.

Rotate filters. Don't change them all at once if you have more than one. But if you have enough live rock and not too high of a bio load it probably wouldn't hurt to change them all at the same time. I change both of mine out at the same time but I have a light bio load and I really watch my feeding closely.

I want to kill them. I'll get two foam pads. Once a week, swap it out and rinse the old one and let it air-dry. Thanks.

ok i can understand the xtra nitrates but if you don't have enough other biofiltration you may get a small cycle everytime you switch out the filters

Littlepuff, what other filtration do you have? I see you didn't mention live rock or a sump etc. If you only have the filter you are changing out for bio filtration, you may like Sam said get a small cycle or ammonia which is something you don't want.
