Saltwater changes

Which parameters should I equalize/match between new saltwater and my tank water before doing a water changes. I know temp, ph and salinity should be matched but is there any other parameter to match ?

Depends on the system size. On my 150 I match salinity when doing a 10 gallon change and make sure the temp is kinda close.

Might be a little over the top.

But i also match Ca, Alk and Mg. My natural salt water gets delivered at sligtly under my ideal parameters.

So when i get my 1000l delivered a do a batch of tests to work out how much i need to dose to bring the whole thing up to correct levels. Saves time rather than doing it for each water change.

Of course if your not dosing then dont worry about it

Well. How important is that anyway? If you did a 10% change with salinity 1.030 and the tank 1.024 you would raise salinity to about 1.025. (Unless my math is cafluey)

Similarly you could put 10% water in 10 degrees colder and only drop the temp 1 degree.

Changes are often the source of higher Mg, CO3 and Ca, and others.

Does not seem to be much of an issue to me so long as the new water is added so it mixes in with DT water.

assuming total water volume is 100G. (1.024 salinity)

10% of 100G = 10G (1.030 salinity)
10% water change = 100G-10G = 90G left in the system
salinity of water left in the system = 1.024*90G=92.16
salinity of water adding to system = 1.030*10G=10.3
new salinity of the whole system =(92.16+10.3)/100 =1.0246

so only .0006 difference for a small change. if it's a large water change, the difference will be bigger. i think salinity difference of .001 is ok but stable water conditions including salinity, temperature, alkalinity, etc are necessary to be successful in reef keeping hobby imo. :D

I have never bothered even checking temps. In fact, I don't even measure salinity. I know it is close. I do 10% changes.
