So I am starting up a 65 gallon tank, and I'm having difficulty transporting large amounts of water from the pet store to home. I was thinking about using a garbage can, but does anyone else have any ideas?
If you have a truck with a flat bed that would be handy. Of course the water gets extremely heavy when you fill a giant container like that. When I filled mine I used 18 gallon rubbermaid containers and filled it up about 2/3 of the way. My car got really wet and the water splashed everywhere so it isn't really the best idea. lol. But my tank was full at the end of it and I only had to go back one more time because I miscalculated. I think the garbage can would be fine but like I said you can't fill it up too high unless you are extremely strong. If you can afford and install an RODI unit that would be the best idea of course.
Do you have an RO/DI? If not, bite the bullet now and get one. The cost of 65g at the LFS will pay for 1/3 of the RO/DI and over a year it will pay for itself completely!
Otherwise, buy gallon bottles of distilled water (NOT spring water) at the grocery store and salt at the LFS and make your own.
You can purchase 5 gal water jugs from the local bottled water company for about $5 or so. This makes it easier to carry the water. IMO Even the places that sell the 5 gal jugs will sell you an empty or 3 whatever you need.

+1 for RODI and mixing your own saltwater. If you're unable to bite the bullet now for one reason or another, Use some CLEAN 5 Gallon buckets with lids. don't ever use any container that has ever had any chemicals in it. It's not worth the risk.
Best option is to get an RODI, and a couple of large Brute containers for saltwater mixing/storage and RODI storage for topoffs. Currently I have a dozen 5 gallon buckets I use for storage, and they take up a lot of room. Waiting for the right time to get the Wife's approval on upgrading to a saltwater mixing station with a few brutes.

Don't miss the weekly trips to the LFS for water!
RO/DI was the best $$ I've in this hobby, after the fish and corals of course.
I still go to the LFS every week, but the only water I bring home is in livestock bags.
Yea, when I ran my 10 gallon, trips to the LFS were fine. Upgraded to a 65 and a RODI was a lifesaver. Use those garbage bins to store water as you make it. I use one for freshwater top off, one for saltwater for water changes.
