Saltwaternoobys 225g All Starfire Reef

HUGE Thanks to the guys that came out to help me move the old tank out and the new one in. It was a long night, but it was almost 100% running when i went to sleep. Just needed more water in the sump for the skimmer to work properly.

Doubt you are still reading so here are some photos!

Old tank being broken down

Purple haze monti that was growing on the bottom of the tank, came up in one piece.(Didnt go back in that way but O well.)

New tank in place

And Finally!!!!

Going to be my favorite view when i finish mounting stuff!(water is still cloudy, i will take some more in a few days.

I think you mentioned the top part is the one with the broken seam. Just cut the tank in half and use the top part as resource for raw material - as a eurobrace so it won't bow. It's weird but the tank gets more valuable as soon as you turn it into a frag tank. Like what I did with my 150 gallon display.

Priceless

Priceless

Got 4 little ones on my own ... Cute pic!!!

Ok Here is a new build i am starting:

Details:
225g 3 side starfire peninsula 60x36x24 tall. External overflow with a small internal box like the ghost overflow. 3 1" drains 2 1" returns
I will be using my existing sump room and the 120g(starfire) that is in it. Skimmer is a AquaEuro 400 and there will be 3-4 WP60s for flow.

The story of how i decided to upgrade is long, but basically my tank has a bad seam that was ready to split(I braced it and it has held for a month). I went and bought a 210g 60x34x24 from craigslist and after transport it developed a 20" crack in the front pane. So i decided to get a brand new tank. Here are some pictures of the progress.

Home built stand from 2x6 and 2x4 yet to be skinned.

Delivered on the stand(Check out the new skimmer)

It will be a migration from my 150g to this tank, hopefully in one day. Still waiting on the glass for the external overflow and bulkheads but then it will be ready to go.

150g

First inhabitants in the tank!!

Awesome! Congrats.
How did the move go? Did anything happen that your were expecting?

Thanks, they are lots of fun.

It went as expected, i didnt loose any fish, even the wrasses and their burying(so far). Some corals didnt seem to like the transfer, so we will see with them. I had plenty of tanks on hand to hold the water during transfer, but i didnt have enough new water made to fill completely.

Things that i was expecting
  • Some coral frags
  • Lots of time involved
  • Lose a piece or 2
  • Gain lots of open sand bed.

Things that i wasn't expecting
  • How much time it would take.
  • How long it takes to fill up the tank with the mag drive i have.

All in all nothing terrible, just lots of work especially with bigger corals. The last time i did this my Acros weren't quite as big!!

My c quarium colonies tend to form a sphere while salt noob has his all over the place. How did that happen? Even the frag I got from the swap that came from salt noobs tank is also forming a sphere. Weird.

Me and ros_scon have some of the same acros that grow totally different in each tank. It's a flow thing i think

I've noticed the more flow the tighter the colony grows. But noobs seems to defy that theory. The one I got from psyko also seems to be growing in a spherical shape.

Here is the c quarium that I got from Eugene (reef insomnia) from a trade. I had 2 branches in the beginning but it encrusted quickly.

Here is the same coral now as of 9/12/14.

Other side

My only thought as to why is, it was direct middle with high flow on both sides separate pumps pushing forwards. Not on the side of rock structures like yours appear Glenn.
