SaltyStlouis 90 gallon build

I am a big fan(no pun intended) of the fan controller you are getting, I will be ordering one of those soon here.
As for fans there are a lot of different ones out there. I personally got mine on Ebay. They were cheapo's but I havn't had any issues with them, and they are pretty quiet.

HTH

Spleify

I actually just got the chaep 120mm fans from bestbuy. Cost was not much cheaper online and they are really quite. your welcome to come out and see for yourself anytime you want.

spleify - when you say your a big fan of that controller have you seen one in action ??

rb nice 1 - i just might take you up on that offer .... if you remeber how much did you pay for your fans from best buy ??

That's the controller I use. Works great.

For silent high flow fans I would recommend the SilenX 14dba 72cfm 120mm fans. I use those and the vantec stealths. The Silenx's are quieter.

will 16 - awesome picture !! im glad to see somebody else has had the same idea.. so of course i have a few questions

did you have to extend the wires on the fans or did you mount the controller close to them ?

can you turn a fan all the way off with this controller ?

i would love to see how you mounted the controller do you have any pics ?

i see the 12v converter is included with the controller is one of those wall wart types . is it big like big enough to block the other outlets on a power strip ??

thanks for all the help

Salty I think they were 14 bucks each. I have them on my AC jr and use it to help cool the tank. they move a ton of air.

Like I said, before you spend money on it your welcome to come out and see what I have and decide for yourself.

Yes I do :) I think the fan stuff is on page 4 of my build thread.

To answer some of your questions. I did extend the wires for the fans. Just cut, solder wire in between. I forget the actual lengths but I did extend them quite a bit. No problems. I think I used 18ga wire?

Unfortunately you can not turn the fans completely off.

I don't have the controller mounted so nice. Just stuffed into the electrical compartment. I should since I do find myself adjusting the fans more frequently than I thought I would.

The power adapter can be a pain to fit. I just use a 8" extension from radio shack. With that, it will fit anywhere you want it to. One of the greatest inventions ever :)

I have this fan controller controlled by my reefkeeper 2 controller set to come on and off with the lights. I usually leave them running at min speed and increase depending on temp.

have alook at wills tank, that will inspire you as well. like the skimmer, its so big i thought it was a see-through washing machine:lol: seriously i think you have agreat set up there, when is the water going in? dont forget pics:)

Michael -
my plan is water by the end of the year as i still have several projects to finish in the room the tank will sit in and then i can get to work on some tank projects, dont worry there will be plenty of pics to come !!

your right wills tank is very inspiring i can only hope my new 90 turns out as nice as his !!

i have lots and lots of respect for you as you have read up on marine aquaria and listened, your set up is sensational and you have already made many friends with your thread, i wish everyone who is a newbie would take the advice you have, well done louis all the best to you, cant wait for the pics

will 16 -
your tank is awesome man ! and thanks for all the input on the fan controller i will be ordering one here in the next few days but now since i have found out you cant turn a fan all the way off im wondering if its possible to run the fan power wires through a toggle switch panel and then to the controller so i can have the option to turn a fan off. so im going to try to think that overalittle more.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I agree, you are off to a great start.

I guess if you want to be able to turn off fans individually you could add a toggle in between. Or you can run the fan controller through a switch so you can adjust the flow and also turn all the fans on/off. I use the american dj power strip for switched outlets...

I have never had to turn off individual fans though. I just have them on the same schedule as the lights. If I have to turn off fans for maintenance, I just turn off the entire controller (all fans).
